This is the weekend of the 2020 Nebraska State Wrestling Tournament held in Omaha and Kimball has FOUR STATE QUALIFIERS! It has been a long time since the Longhorns have sent this many young men to the BIG SHOW down east. Congrats to Coaches Wade Brashear and Bob Culek and to the four young men who will represent Kimball High. They are, Stephen Bateman, Connor Cluff, Trey Schindler and Matthew Johnson. Enjoy the experience!
Talkin’ Basketball
The basketball season is closing out also with sub-district tournaments taking place. The Kimball girls had their first round game with Perkins County at Ogallala this past Tuesday and the Kimball boys go to Gering this coming Tuesday where they will meet up with Morrill in the & p.m. game. Bridgeport, the number one seed had a bye and they will play the winner of the Hemingford-Bayard game that was held on Monday night. Morrill is the number 2 seed and Kimball is the number 3 seed. The championship game is at 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 27th.
Here’s To The Seniors
A game you fans don’t want to miss is tomorrow night (Friday) when the Kimball boys end their regular season hosting Mitchell as it is also Senior Parents Night where all of the senior players and their parents will be honored. Kimball has a large class of senior players this year, with 8 total listed on the roster. The honored group includes Austin Lulf, Lane Wasielewski, Jacob Withrow, Brendan Walker, Samuel Cajero, Brayden Tyan, Beau Hanks and exchange student Arthur Laveran. JV game time is 4 p.m. with the boys varsity to follow.
Cougar Ball
I managed to get up to Cougar Palace this past week to see the WNCC women and men play and was treated to some top notch college basketball by both teams.
Tishara Morehouse, a 5’4” guard for the Cougar ladies, who came to WNCC from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is truly an outstanding basketball player. Despite her small stature, she goes inside whenever she wants to and scores! She can also hit the long 3 pointers and is without a doubt the quickest female player I have ever watched. After their 96-73 win over Northeastern Junior College the Lady Cougars are now 23 and 1 and have 21 consecutive wins!
The Cougar men lost to Northeastern 97-77 but the Sterling club is leading region IX with a 20-6 record and the Cougar men are second at 16-9 after the loss. They have played more games since the game I attended. Teddy Allen is a name you might want to remember as the 6’5” sophomore who is from Mesa, Arizona but played his high school ball at Boys Town, Nebraska, played a year Division One West Virginia and then a red shirt year at Wichita before coming to Scottsbluff. He is the leading scorer in the nation, or at least was at one time. He scored 24 the night I saw him play but I saw he hit for 42 the next game they played. Saw some good basketball!
