Bombs Away! Horns Lose In Record Shootout

The Kimball High Lady Longhorns lost 64-55 to Hershey in first round play at the SPVA Conference Tournament in action played at the Kimball site Monday evening.

It was truly an entertaining and exciting contest for the fans as it was a long-range shootout with both teams displaying their shooting abilities from behind the 3-point arc and tied a state record with 23 total 3-pointers made!

Kimball connected on 12 treys and Hershey on 11 with sophomore Shayda Vaughn getting a new school record for the Hershey Lady Panthers with 9 to better their old school mark of 6.

Kimball's Sydney Biesecker wound up with 6 treys to tie for 3rd place in the Kimball High record books, and Carli Wurdeman had 5 and Megan Spicer 1.

The first 4 baskets made Monday evening were 3 pointers with Miss Vaughn scoring 3 of those to put Hershey up 9-3. At the first quarter break she already had 4 treys and 14 points to give her Lady Panthers a 17-9 lead over Kimball.

By halftime each team had 6 treys, but Hershey had a 35-24 lead thanks in large part to the aggressive man-to-man defense Hershey was applying which led to Kimball turnovers.

The 3rd quarter belonged to Kimball as they came out of the half time locker room ready to go and outscored Herszhey 25-15 with Biesecker and Wurdeman pouring in 3 pointers. The 3rd quarter closed with Megan Spicer hitting a trey and Sam Bemis scoring on a hard drive to the bucket to leave Kimball trailing 50-49.

The 4th quarter opened with Bemis hitting a free throw to tie the game at 50-50, but that was as close as the Lady Horns would get as Hershey responded with a pair of treys and went on to outscore Kimball 14-6 in the final period for the win. Kimball also lost both Biesecker and Bemis in the closing minutes of play to fouls which hurt the cause.

While setting a new school record with her 9 treys, Vaughn also scored 29 points to lead Hershey to victory. The winners had 8 players score with Carly Sexson in double figures with 10 and Tahlia Steinbeck had 8.

The difference in the contest was the scoring inside as Hershey had 10 buckets for 2 point field goals and Kimball only 4. Both teams shot poor at the foul line with Hershey 11/26 and Kimball 11/23. Hershey had 20 fouls and Kimball 18.

Kimball was 16/36 from the field for 44% but only 4/12 on 2 point field goals for 33% and a very good 12/24 on 3 pointers for 50%, better even than their 11/23 at the foul line for 48%.

Kimball also charted 25 rebounds but only 3 offensive, had 10 steals, 13 assists, 19 fouls and 17 turnovers.

In individual stats, Wurdeman ended with 20 points with her 5 treys and was also 3/4 at the foul line. Biesecker had 18 points going 6/8 on 3 pointers. Spicer had 8 points with 1 trey, Bemis 7, and Katie Heeg 2.

Bemis was also top rebounder with 7, Wurdeman led in assists with 4, and Heeg and Spicer both charted 3 steals.

With the loss the Kimball girls are now 4-8 on the season and will play for the 5th place honors in the SPVA Tournament on Saturday in the 11 a.m. Mountain time game at Mid Plains Community College in North Platte.
