Kimball Splits With Leyton In Jamboree Games

KIMBALL

BOYS WIN, 49-23

A good showing for the Kimball High boys in the Jamboree game at Leyton Monday evening as they won 49-23. The Jamboree game is a game allowed by the NSAA for all Nebraska teams as a warmup game prior to the start of the regular season and does not count in their win-loss records. It was also a chance for new head coach Mo Hanks to get an idea just what he has to work with this season, although he was without a couple of his key players who are still recovering from football injuries.

One thing for certain, the Longhorns played some good defense in holding the Warriors to just 23 points. Offensively the Horns had 7 players in the scoring columns led by Jacob Withrow with 13 points including 3 treys. Brendan Walker also hit double figure with 11 and had 1 trey on the night. Austin Lulf finished with 8 points and did all of his scoring in the first half. Sam Cojero and Beau Hanks both tallied 5 points, Thomas Muldoon had 4, and Cole Heim had 3 with his trey. The Horns had 21 field goals with 5 treys and were 2 of 7 at the foul line.

The Leyton boys had 8 field goals including 3 treys and were 4 of 13 at the line. High scorer for the Warriors was K.J. Bush with 7.

WATCHORN SCORES 34

TO LEAD LEYTON GIRLS

Madelyn Watchorn scored 34 points to lead the Leyton girls to a 58-50 win over Kimball and she was the spark to getting the win for the Leyton ladies.

"We had no answer to stopping her" said Kimball Coach Chauncey Pedersen. "We played well I thought other than not being able to contain Watchorn" Pedersen said. He went on to say the Kimball girls gave good effort and was pleased they scored 50 points in their opening contest and scored that many against a heighth of Leyton.

Kimball was ahead 23-18 at half time, but had some key players in foul trouble causing Pedersen to have to sit them out for awhile, which also hurt the cause. Leyton came on to outscore Kimball 40-27 in the second half of play.

Carli Wurdeman led Kimball with 12 points and hit 3 treys showing she hasn't lost her long range touch, but she was one of the players who was in foul trouble early and ended up up fouling out. Sydney Biesecker hit double figures with 10 and hit a pair of treys. Sam Bemis was close to double figures with 9 points but also fouled out but it was good to see the talented young lady back in uniform for Kimball after missing last season when she attended school in Colorado. Megan Spicer had a big second quarter where she scored all of her 7 points. Jenna Greenwood is also a pleasant addition to the program after sitting out last season and she ended up with 4 points, as did Katie Heeg including 2 of 2 foul shooting. Chantel Malson got the other 2 points for Kimball.

In team stats, Kimball had 19 field goals including 5 treys, were 7 of 20 at the foul line and had 20 fouls. Leyton had 22 field goals with 4 treys, were 10 of 17 at the line, and had 15 fouls.

Watchorn, the 6 foot senior who has been a 4 year starter and was all region last year after averaging 18 plus points, was the standout with her 34 points. Leyton also got 10 points from Sage Rommel and had 6 players total in the scoring columns.

The regular season tips off this weekend for Kimball as they host their annual 4-school tournament involving Morrill, Potter-Dix, and Dundy County. The tournament play begins Friday afternoon at 3 and continues on Saturday afternoon. (See the bracket and story in this week's Observer sports)
