Sutherland Runs Past Horns, 80-18

Sutherland dominated in their 80-18 win over the Kimball High Longhorns in 8-man football action Friday night at the Sutherland site.

The winners jumped out to a 22-6 lead at the end of the opening quarter of play and led 64-12 at halftime after scoring 42 second quarter points. They coasted to the 80-18 win with a running clock the entire second half.

Kimball kept it close early when Austin Lulf returned a Sutherland kickoff 75 yards to score just 14 seconds after the host team scored the opening touchdown. The Horns scored again in the second quarter on another kickoff return, when Lulf lateraled to Christian Allen-Van Pelt to complete the 57-yard return. Kimball’s final score came in the third quarter. The Horns failed to score any of their 2 point conversion tries.

The stats are fairly close and not indicative of the difference in the final score. The winners had 290 yards of offense to Kimball’s 213 and ran 40 plays to Kimball’s 46. The huge negative for the Horns were their 8 turnovers with 2 interceptions and 6 lost fumbles.

Sutherland was 5 for 7 passing for 46 yards and 3 touchdowns, Kimball was 3 for 6 yards passing for 48 yards with Walker 2 for 7 for 54 yards and 2 interceptions.

Sutherland’s top rusher was Carter Snyder with 88 yards on 10 carries for 3 touchdowns, but the winners had 9 ball carriers. Allen-Van Pelt led Kimball rushing with 55 yards on 8 carries with 1 touchdown. Arthur Laveran had 7 carries for 52 yards, Walker 8 for 31 yards with 1 TD, Justin Klosterman 11 carries for 16 yards, and Austin Lulf 5 for 11 yards. Lulf had all 3 of Kimball’s receptions for 48 yards. Lulf also averaged nearly 23 yards on 6 kickoff returns.

A solid night on both sides of the ball for Lulf as he shared top defensive honors with Beau Hanks with 4 solo tackles each.

Stephen Bateman and Arthur Laveran both charted 3 tackles and 2 assists. Ethan Greenwood and Dakota Lewis were 3 and 1, Allen-Van Pelt and Blaynne Rohde both charted 2 tackles, and Justin Klosterman, Javon Coyle and Brendan Walker all had 1 tackle.

The Longhorns have been celebrating Homecoming week all this week and will close out their football season tomorrow (Friday) night hosting the Bayard Tigers with kickoff at 7 p.m..
