'Fun On The Fourth' A Winner For Kimball Kiwanis
Kimball Kiwanis member Kayla Fennell displayed her "fun little hidden talent" at the 2nd annual Kiwanis "Fun on the Fourth" event in Gotte Park that attracted an estimated 200 to 250 people.
Kayla "is the pro," according to Kiwanis president Maggie Laughin. Her talent is making balloon animals and they were a hit. The lines were long and the kids patiently waited for their special animal to be made.
Kayla has been making balloon animals since high school and she recently taught Maggie to make a few animals to alleviate some of the wait time on the fourth. Maggie learned to make swords, cats, dogs, and hats. While Kayla whipped up those balloon items and more, the most unique animal Kayla made was a monkey, climbing a palm tree.
In addition to the balloon animals, the Kiwanis service club had lots of games for kids and parents to play, crafts to do, hots dogs and watermelon to eat.
Kiwanis is a volunteer organization. Kimball-Banner County Kiwanis started in April 2018 and in addition to the activities on July 4th they also put on a Grad Movie Night for the seniors of Kimball and Banner County Schools.
Jay Fennell, the upcoming president of Kiwanis said that with their 15 members they try to focus on the youth of the community.
"We remembered someone doing watermelon in the park when we were kids, 20 or 25 years ago and so we decided we would bring that back and do some games and crafts," he said. "We didn't have hotdogs last year, so we are doing hotdogs this year, hoping to add something each year."
Sponsors included Main Street Market, Points West Bank and L.B. Foster. Jay also mentioned that Firstier Bank was sponsoring the fireworks.
As usual on the Fourth of July, the Kimball Fire Department gave rides on the fire trucks and trained the young "firefighters" to spray the fire hose.
The fire department truck rides has been a long standing tradition for July 4th. Kimball Fire Department brought their 1928 bright red Chevrolet fire truck to cruise around the park.
