The streets of the small town of Potter were lined with people, as well as over 150 classic cars for this year's Potter Car-Bowl.
A weekend for a small town in Nebraska turned into quite a success.
That's right, folks, the Potter Car Bowl was sizzlin' hot this with over 150 cars, trucks, motorcycles, and tractors in the car show, eight cooking teams entered in the BBQ contest, 37 contestants in the Pinewood Derby, two very special guests from Gering and much more.
"This weekend was a huge success, we wanted to boost the attendance of the melodrama performance for the first few years. There were many people in town this weekend, including a family reunion as well as a class reunion," said Drew Enevoldsen. a committee member of the event.
A couple of new additions to the event included Beer and Wine Tasting as well as a BBQ Contest, where a few members of the Kimball community were ready to get cookin'.
The Pinewood Derby that drew 37 young contestants also included a group who made the trip from Cheyenne, Wyoming, to help out the contestants, the Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA) Frontier Chapter. Members of the BACA helped contestants build, paint, and race the cars and judge the event.
Also on tap for the weekend was the Melodrama play "History of Dating." According to Enevoldsen, members of the audience said, "The play was the most entertaining one they have had."
The special guests to the day's event made the trip from Hi Way 92 Raceway Park in Gering. They are two very well known cars, the Mater and Lightning McQueen both pace cars for the race track. A great addition to the event for adults and kids of all ages.
The new addition to the annual event included a BBQ contest featuring eight teams and five different categories, Brisket, Chicken, BBQ Sauce, Baked Beans and Cornbread. Teams were given their meat for the contest Friday night shortly after the meeting at 8 p.m. teams cooked and stayed up all night preparing meat for the next days judging.
Scott Eddy, a Kimball local took home first place in the Brisket category followed by Kimball native Dave Klinkhammer, and Sean Gross in third place. In the Chicken category Klinkhammer took home first prize followed by Lee Herz and Dave Olson in third. BBQ Contest it was all Kimball, with Mark Whetham in first followed by Klinkhammer in second and Wacey Schmid in third. Eddy took first place home in the Baked Beans followed by Gross in second and Klinkhammer in third. The Cornbread category was again all Kimball with Whetham in first, Klinkhammer in second and Schmid in third.
In the People's Choice category it was Eddy who took home the Brisket honors, Whetham for the Chicken, the Baked Beans and also the Cornbread. Herz took home the honor for the BBQ Sauce for People's Choice.
Grand Champion over all went to Klinkhammer, followed by Whetham in second and Herz in third.
"The weekend went fantastic, there was 400 pounds of brisket and twenty chickens. The crowd loved it, we served over 200 people, teams did a great job they stayed up all night cooking and preparing then were ready Saturday for the judging," said Ed Revord of the BBQ Contest.
Both Revord and Evevoldsen thanked everyone for coming out to support the event and great proceeds to support the American Legion Hall. Revord also thanked all of the volunteers who helped make this weekend a success and is on the lookout for additional volunteers for next year.
