Bountiful Baskets Only Succeeds With Volunteers

Bountiful Baskets has been operating in Kimball since December of 2013 when Hilary Cook started it and Erin Heidemann came on board shortly after 2013. Bountiful Baskets is not a business, it is a group of people who work together for mutual benefit, it is a cooperative. It is grassroots, all volunteer, no contracts, and no catch. Since there are no employees at Bountiful Baskets, according to their website “we as a group pay rock bottom prices on your food”.

The produce varies from week to week. As Erin Heidemann said: “You never know what you are going to get.” In the past, participants here in Kimball have received coconuts, papaya, and jicama. This week “we had add ons which were asparagus, peaches, and mandrain oranges”. Erin and Hilary created a Facebook page entitled Kimball’s Fresh Choice which chronicles Kimball’s Bountiful Baskets.

Bountiful Baskets would not happen without volunteers. Volunteer opportunities include helping prepare the baskets, breaking down boxes, assisting with the distribution, and packing up. To help out, simply arrive an hour early dressed and ready to work with water to drink.

Kimball is on the “B” week schedule. Erin said that they range from 15 to 50 baskets, although in March they broke their record and had 60 baskets to prepare. The fall and winter usually is the time that more people participate. People order Monday and Tuesday of alternating weeks, then the produce arrives in a truck by 9:00 a.m. on the following Saturday.
