So Many Stories Over The Years

Jock Talk

After last week’s story on Brady Kilgore bringing home three medals from the Nebraska State Track Meet and informing you readers about Jay Staehr doing this himself back in 1994, I asked for you readers to come up with some of your own memories of outstanding feats at the state meets.

Coach Bill Wallace responded with a call about his 1971 Banner County High girl’s track team that won an all class gold medal in the 1971 State meet held in Grand Island. His 4 x 200 relay team of Peggy King, LeAnn May, Jeannie Larson, and Amy Lease ran 1:49.4 to win the All Class Gold Medal! The Harrisburg ladies also finished runner-up in Class D scoring 21 points and losing to Thedford by 1 point as Thedford scored 22.

Bert Linn can also come up with some very interesting track and field stories that he get from the internet and he has a great interest in this so he follows it on a regular basis. I am still not into this social media endeavor so I rely on my kids and grandkids, plus friends like Bert to feed me this info.

Bert brought my attention to a young lady from Class C Superior who is leading the nation in the discus event with a throw of 176 feet plus. At this year’s state track meet she repeated as champion and gold medal winner in both the discus and shot put. Her name is Kalynn Meyer and I know going into the state meet she was leading the state with marks of 174’2” and 47’3”. Although she was just a junior this season, she has already committed to the University of Nebraska, not in track but as a volleyball recruit! Wow . . . keep that name in mind! This young lady is something special.

Mark June 1 on your calendars for the Panhandle Prep All Star games being held at WNCC Gymnasium with the girls’ game to tip off at 5:30 p.m. with the boys to follow.
