Plains Historical Museum is Looking For YOU!

Do you have a couple hours during the week? Do you like meeting new people? The Plains Historical Society Museum is looking for you.

As summer approaches, the Plains Historical Society is making plans to open the museum downtown -- the Fraternal Hall, which is located on 2nd and Chestnut. The Fraternal Hall Museum will be open three days a week, in the afternoon but they are looking for people to help with this summertime opening.

They need volunteers to work from 2-4 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday, you pick your day. If you have a little time and wouldn't mind helping out in the community call museum historian, Karen Bivins at 308-235-3877.

This is not a huge commitment but certainly would help out the museum. Volunteers will show displays to visitors, so certainly no heavy lifting. Displays include an outstanding collection of arrowheads from O.E. Forsling, a huge doll collection from Salma Hammond, and Nebraska license plates from 1915 and Kimball County plates beginning in 1922.

The Fraternal Hall was built in 1904 as a meeting place for local groups such as the Knight of Pythias, Woodman, and Royal Neighbors. In 1983, the Fraternal Hall was listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

The architecture of the building is neo-classical revival style and is significant to the community socially because it acted as a meeting place for local organizations.

The hstorical society began leasing the Fraternal Hall in 1956 and eventually purchased the building.
