Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First

Race Season Around Corner

It’s time for a new season and hopes to bring yet another record breaking year in Julesburg, Colorado, at the drag strip. The oldest NHRA Drag strip in the USA, it’s still at the same location and a summer event that has continued to grow over the years.

With the first race weekend coming up fast, crews are in full swing with just a few short days before opening weekend this Saturday and Sunday, April 13 and 14.

“We are getting close and we are expecting another great year. Last year was a record breaking year. We had 320 cars in one weekend. We couldn’t have fit another one in that weekend if we tired,” said Todd Barowsky.

Just over an hour away, Kimball area locals travel at least twice a month to compete at the track.

“We have about 10-12 racers from around the Kimball community,” he said.

Some of these contestants have been making this trip for years, local racers include, Doug Gunderson, Rodney Rasgorshek, Scott Worth, Todd Vogel, Wade Kiefer and a few others.

Wade Kiefer (Curley’s) puts on two big races, ‘Curley’s Big Bucks Shootout’ Memorial Day Weekend, May 26, and ‘Curley’s Jr. Drag Challenge,’ July 14.

“We want to get more people talking about our track, the races and of course to get more people out to enjoy the race days with us.” added Barowsky.

Stay tuned for race updates and results in the Observer.
