Kimball Boys Advance With 60-49 Win Over Morrill

The Kimball High boys put together one of their better games Monday night in sub-district tournament play to win 60-49 over Morrill, keeping their season alive and advancing them into semi final play against number one seed Bridgeport.

It was a hard fought battle with 37 fouls called and 52 free throws shot. Kimball coach Luke Dea went to his bench often and got good play out of all of his Longhorns with eight players total getting into the scoring columns. The two teams battled even in the opening period that ended at 12-12 with five Horns already getting into the scoring act.

Kimball outscored the Lions 12-7 in the second period to lead 24-19 at half time, and six Longhorns contributed points in the second quarter. It was a good half of hustle and rebounding for Coach Dea’s club. The third quarter opened with Izaac Reuter hitting a three pointer, and seconds later Beau Hanks followed with his trey. When

Corey Travis made a put-back basket off a rebound, Kimball led 32-21. Reuter tallied eight points in the third quarter and Kimball outscored Morrill 18-10 to lead 42-29 entering the fourth period.

With players in foul trouble, Coach Dea went into a semi-delay type offense early in the final quarter, forcing Morrill to be more aggressive as the clock ran, and the Horns went to the foul line and shot 18 free throws, making 10, in the closing stanza, and finished strong for the win. Beau Hanks did foul out with 3:15 to play. The Horns shot the ball well going 20/46 from the field for 43 percent but were only 2/14 on three point attempts, and were 18/34 at the foul line. They hit the boards hard with 37 rebounds including 15 offensive, had seven steals, 11 assists, 20 fouls, and 16 turnovers. Brayden Tyan led Kimball scoring with 17 points and was high in steals with two. Izaac Reuter had 13 points with one trey and was top rebounder with nine and in assists with four. Brendan Walker had 9 points, Brady Kilgore 6 plus 8 rebounds, Beau Hanks 5 with 1 trey, Zane Anthony five, Corey Travis four along with eight rebounds three assists, and Sam Cajero one. Morrill with 16 points. Jerry Tarin had nine, Kilten McMacken eight, Keaton Robb seven, Blake Lofink six, and Rowdy Lind three. Kimball was to return to Scottsbluff High for their encounter with Bridgeport this past Tuesday, while Hemingford and Bayard were to clash in the other semi-final. The championship game will be tonight (Thursday) at 6:30 back at Scottsbluff High.
