Regular Season Winding Down; Daum Visits Denver

The Western Trails Conference Basketball Tournament of 2019 is in the books and it played out just like it was supposed to with the number one seeded teams winning it all.

The Mitchell girls and the Bridgeport boys were crowned champions Saturday evening while Hemingford won 3rd place in the boy's division and our own Kimball High girls took home consolation honors in the girls division earning their players 3rd place medals.

Now as the season winds down, we are already getting ready for sub-district play and the girls sub-district that involves Kimball will be held at Scottsbluff High February 11-12-14 and although the official bracket has not been set up at the time of this writing, coach Chauncey Pedersen is quite certain his Lady Longhorns will play Bayard on February 12 in the second game of the evening. The boys start play the following week. Both the girls and boys will play at Hemingford tomorrow (Friday) with JV game time set for 2 p.m.

The Kimball boys will close out their regular season play at Mitchell on February 15.

The Kimball High Wrestlers move on to the District Tournament mats at Broken Bow this weekend, February 8-9, hoping to get some state qualifying finishes from their small squad.

On the bad-news side of things, top wrestler, Jordan Cluff, missed the conference tournaments at Bridgeport this past week due to an injury he suffered in P.E. class. The good news is he will be ready to go for Districts! Still some junior high boys basketball for you fans to catch. They are at Sidney today (Thursday) for games at 4 p.m. and Tuesday, February 12, they are at Pine Bluffs for 4 p.m. games.

Daum In Denver

Kimball's Mike Daum put on a good show for all of his fans who made the trip to Denver this past Sunday to see him in person. His South Dakota State Jacks won over DU 92-82 and Mike scored 28 points on 12/19 shooting going 2/4 on treys and 2/3 at the foul line. He also had 12 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 3 assists.

On January 31, SDS won over Oral Roberts 86-80 and Mike had 23 points and 9 rebounds and he shot 11/12 at the line. After the DU game, Mike now has 2,854 career points and this moves him past the legendary Larry Bird in the Division One record books. He also broke the South Dakota State career rebound record, and he reached the 20 points or better scoring feat for the 74th time in his career.

We are all so proud of you Big Mike and just keep on adding to the numbers. By the way, you readers might have had a laugh, I hope, at the goof up in last week's paper where Daum was spelled Baum in a couple of places. His Mom, Michele, had a good laugh about it. Anyway, Mike, just keep on Bauming those long shots and we will keep on goofing up with the spelling before it gets printed and out to you readers.

Anthem Singer

Jenna Greenwood

Two times this past weekend I had the pleasure of listening to Kimball's Jenna Greenwood open up events singing the National Anthem. She certainly does a wonderful job and is blessed to have such a quality voice. She sang the Anthem to open up play at the Western Trails Conference Basketball Tournament on Thursday, and then again to open the Kimball Federation Wrestling Tournament this past Sunday.

I managed to get a picture of Jenna to share with you readers and also shot a picture of the over flowing crowd at the Wrestling Tournament Sunday. It is amazing how many show up for these events. And, it is amazing how they organize, and run these events with the number of wrestlers involved and how they can keep everyone informed of when each wrestler is due on the mats. They do a Great job!
