Kimball’s Mike Daum Still Dominating For Jackrabbits

Kimball’s Mike Daum had another big week of basketball as he led his South Dakota State team to wins over North Dakota State and the Omaha Mavericks.

His Jackrabbitts won over North Dakota State, 87-69, and Mike had 30 points, shooting 11/15 from the field and 4/6 on 3 pointers, plus 4/5 at the foul line, and he had 17 rebounds.

In the UNO game, SDS won 83-73 with Mike scoring 33 and pulling 16 rebounds along with 5 assists. He now has 1,112 career rebounds, which ranks him second all time in the Summit League.

For his outstanding week of play, Mike received the coveted Luke Olson award for National Player of the week!

After the win over Omaha, he now has 2,803 career points scored, which is 17th nationally all time for career points scored.

Mike and his Jacks will play at DU in Denver this Sunday, and I know he can expect a good turnout from his hometown fans. I don’t guess it is going to work out for me this time, Mike, but I will be cheering for you just the same.

They Like Mike

An interesting story to share with you readers this week concerns Mike, the 2013 Kimball High graduate and a couple of former Kimball residents.

Betty Barrett (Hamzy), Kimball High Class of 1960, was thoughtful enough to send me a picture that she took of her sister Judy Barrett, Class of 1962, with a friend – who as a graduate of South Dakota State posed with none other than Mike after a game played in Cheney, Wash.

“We got Mike’s attention with the red (Kimball) all-class polo shirt Judy was wearing,” Betty said.

A cool picture. Thanks for sharing this with us, Barrett sisters.

Good Local Hoops

We had some good High School basketball played locally this past week.

The Kimball High girls had a big win at Sutherland on Friday night, and the Kimball High boys had their best showing of the year with their win over North Platte St. Pats on Saturday night. Be sure and read the stories in this week’s sports.

A large crowd was on hand Saturday for the St. Pats game. It was a special night where all the little girls turned out to entertain at halftime after doing a camp with the Kimball High cheerleaders.

It was also Senior Parents Night for our lone senior cheerleader, Kiersten Anderson, and she really had something to cheer about when the Kimball boys held on for that exciting 49-47 win over the Irish boys.

I will give the St. Pats fans a lot of credit for following their team. They brought so many fans they were seated on both sides of the Kimball gym.

Of course, their girls are ranked Number One in the state in Class D-1 and are undefeated.

Wrestlers In A Good Place

The Kimball High Wrestlers had a good showing at the always tough Mitchell Tournament with four places out of their five wrestlers. Jordan Cluff finished 2nd, while Izaak Rohde, Toby McManigal and Stephen Bateman were all 3rd place finishers.

Local Sports Schedule

The Kimball wrestlers are at Bridgeport today (Thursday) for Conference Tournament action with action to begin

at 9 a.m.

Their District and state qualifying tournament is coming up February 8-9. The winter sports season is fast winding down.

The WTC Conference basketball is being held this weekend and then

on Tuesday, February 5, Pine Bluffs comes to Kimball for some top quality action. The JV games begin at 4 p.m. followed by varsity play. The girls sub-district starts February 11.

The junior high boys are busy with a tournament at Morrill

this Saturday, then play at Bridgeport on Monday, and at Sidney on February 7th.

I will try to catch you readers up on both Kimball junior varsity play for boys and girls, and the junior high boys in the next week or two.
