Perkins Double Trouble For KHS

It was a disappointing loss in an action packed and exciting SPVA Tournament game for the Kimball High boys as they lost 60-59 in double overtime play this past Thursday evening at the College in North Platte.

After a first round loss to Bridgeport, as reported in last week’s Observer, the Horns dropped down into the loser’s bracket play and gave the Perkins County boys from Grant a battle deluxe before losing to finish in 7th place.

Kimball got behind early, trailing 13-7 at the end of the first quarter, and were outscored 14-9 in second quarter play to trail 27-16 at halftime. To its credit, Kimball came back strong in second half play, outscoring the Plainsmen 29-18 to tie the game at 45-45 at end of regulation play and sending it into OT.

Both clubs tallied 7 points in the in the first overtime to extend it to the second overtime period, where Perkins County won by 1 point.

Kimball had a better shooting night, going 22 of 64 from the field for 34 percent, including 6 of 30 on 3 pointers, and were 9 of 18 at the foul line for 50 percent. The winners shot even better, however, going 44 percent from the field and 46 percent on treys, plus 67 percent at the line.

The Grant club also out-rebounded the Horns 40-29. Kimball pulled 11 offensive and 18 defensive boards, had 5 blocked shots, 18 steals, 11 assists, 21 fouls and 14 turnovers.

Izaac Reuter led Kimball scoring with 17 points and hit 3 treys on the night. The 6-2 senior also led the team in rebounds with 8, steals with 6, assists with 4, and had 2 blocks. Brendan Walker and Sam Cajero both hit double figures, scoring with 11 each and both netted 1 trey. Walker also had 7 rebounds and 5 steals. Jacob Withrow finished with 7 points with 1 trey. Beau Hanks had 6 points along with 7 rebounds and 2 blocks. Brayden Tyan had 4 and Zane Anthony 3 in other scoring for Kimball.

Perkins County had three players in double figures, led by Alex Patrick with 19, Spencer Ross 15 and Aaron Fay 14.

The loss leaves Kimball with a record of 4 wins and 9 losses as they head into a tough weekend with a trip to Sutherland on Friday night and a home game with Nthe orth Platte St. Pats on Saturday. JV game times at Sutherland are set for 3:30, ollowed by the varsity girls game and the varsity boys contest. At Kimball on Saturday, JV play begins at 2 p.m. followed, in order, by the girls and boys varsity games.
