Local Track Athletes Honored On All-Region Teams

More off-season, All Region awards, offered up this past week by the Star-Herald as they announced their 2018 All-Region Track and Field Teams.

In the girls division, Kimball had Hannah Biesecker in the long jump and Samantha Bemis in the triple jump on the First Team. Brady Kilgore made the boys First Team as the top 100 meter hurdler.

Banner County High’s MaKenna Dahlgrin was First Team in the shotput and Second Team in the discus. Trinity Langley of Potter-Dix was Second Team in the girls high jump.

Kimball senior Brady Kilgore would not be up to running a flight of hurdles right now as the talented young man was on the sideline this past weekend, using crutches, as his Kimball teammates played basketball without their starting teammate. Brady is recovering from a hip-pointer, but is hoping he can go again after a week’s lay off.

Sad to report also that the Sam Bemis, mentioned above, who was First Team All Region in the triple jump, is no longer enrolled at Kimball. The talented young sophomore, who was also a standout for coach Chauncey Pedersen in basketball, has transferred to a school in Fort Collins. We miss you Sam! We would welcome you back!

I was watching the University of Wyoming versus Utah State on TV Sunday night with main purpose in mind to see Pine Bluffs star Hunter Thompson. Was surprised to see not only Hunter, but also Haize Fornstrom on the court! Hunter is a redshirt freshman, and Haize is a true freshman who went to Wyo to play football, and after the season, walked on to the basketball program and he is getting playing time! How cool is that? Two talented young men from the small town of Pine Bluffs, playing for the Cowboys!

An update on Kimball’s Mike Daum. After a couple of off nights as far as scoring big numbers was concerned, Big Mike got back on track this this past week with 37 points to lead his South Dakota State Team to an 84-65 win over Oral Roberts. Mike was 13-24 from the field and was 3-6 on 3 pointers, and had 8 rebounds.

I enjoyed seeing and talking with Garrett Pedersen, another former Kimball High student-athlete, who arrived home this weekend after graduating from basic training for the Marine Corp in San Diego. You might remember that Garrett was wrestling at 126 pounds for the Horns a year ago, but he now tips the scale at 170 pounds and is still lean and mean! Not mean, really, as he is very cordial young man. Looking good Garrett!

Congrats going out to Kenny Greenwood and the team he played with at a Pro-Am event at the Wigwam Golf Club course in Phoenix, Arizona, this past week. Our own Chuck Christensen was the pro while Kenny, along with Shane Hays, and Jim Prince Jr. and his friend from Denver made up the team that finished 7th out of an entry of 30 teams which earned a bit of money for their finish. Kenny had a real good tournament shooting 78-69 to take low amateur honors. Kenny said the weather was beautiful and they had a great time.

Don’t forget there is junior high boys basketball at Kimball this afternoon (Thursday) with Morrill coming to town for games at 3 p.m. On Monday (Jan. 21), Mitchell is at Kimball for 3 p.m. games.
