The Kimball High winter sports scene is pretty much shut down as they adhere to the Nebraska State School Activities Association Moratorium rules that shut down practices for all Nebraska schools for 5 days from December 22 through December 26.

This means Kimball can begin practice sessions beginning today, but there is still no school until January 7th, but our basketball teams will return to competition on January 3 when both girls and boys host Sidney, and on January 5 they go to Chase County.

The Longhorn wrestlers are back on the mast January 5 at the Garden County Tournament.

In looking over the stat sheets pr ovided to me by the Kimball High coaches, the Lady Longhorns are 4-2 going into the break and the Longhorn boys are 2-4.The stat that sticks out the most is the shooting percentages, for both teams.

The Kimball girls are shooting 32 percent from the field and breaking it down even farther, they are 36 percent on 2 point field goal attempts and 23 percent on 3 point tries.At the foul line they are 54 percent.The starting five are all pretty even with Sydney Biesecker tops with 37 percent followed by Megan Spicer at 34 percent, Carli Wurdeman 33 percent, Kate Reader 31 percent, and Madison Wynne 31 percent.Wurdeman is on top from 3 point range at 36 percent and is 15/42 from behind the arc.She is also the top free throw shooter at 64 percent making 14/22.Spicer is 15/24 for 63 percent, and Biesecker 11/18 for 61 percent.In points score, Wurdeman has 79 and an average of 13.2, Kate Reader 76 and a 12.7 average, Spicer 55 and 9.2 average, and Biesecker 51 points a game.

As a team, Kimball is averaging 51 points a game.

The Lady Horns rebound well averaging 28.5 a contest and Reader is one of the best in the area averaging 11.5 a game.She also leads the team in blocks with 7 and in steals with 23, and has 19 assists to her credit.Wurdeman has 16 steals and a team high 20 assists.Madison Wynne has 14 assists so far and the team averages 13 assists a game.They also average 20 turnovers a game.

Looking at the boy’s stats through 6 games, they are averaging 46.7 points.They are shooting 34 percent from the field including 17 percent from 3 point range making only 13/78 attempts.At the foul line they are 55/116 for 47 percent.Jaren Winstrom has the top field goal average of 54 percent making 7/13 shots while Beau Hanks has hit on 24/49 attempts for 49 percent.Izaac Reuter is 5/15 on 3 point attempts for 33 percent and is 15/28 at the line for 54 percent.Brayden Tyan is 48 percent at the line and Hanks 47 percent.Sam Cajero and Winstrom are both 2/2 at the line and Cajero is 2/3 from the field but has seen limited play so far.

The Horns have done well on the boards with an average of 29.8 rebounds a game.Reuter leads with 38 rebounds with Hanks charted with 36 in one less game played, Tyan has 29, Zane Anthony 23 and Brady Kilgore 21.hanks has 10 blocks and 10 steals.Anthony leads the club in steals with 17, Reuter has 16, and Kilgore 11.Tyan leads in assists with 13 while Kilgore and Reuter both have 12.As a team, Kimball averages 11.5 steals a game and 8.5 assists, along with 16 turnovers per outing.

Both the boys and girls give good effort each and every game, but the schedule is going to get even tougher with Sidney, Chase County, Bridgeport and Mitchell coming up soon.

Chauncey Pedersen is concerned with the slow starts his girls have been having, while Luke Dea is more concerned about the finishing part from his boys as they have had some strong starts in games so far

Let’s see what the New Year will bring to the Kimball High teams.We know they will give that good effort. Now let’s hope those close shots quit rolling out and start falling in.
