Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
This is a story about a man that came to our community in Aug. 2017. He checked into the finer motel for a day then a week and then it was seven months. He and his dog Bo a Red Heeler, he said his name was Boreguard but he just called him Bo. I loved the dog from the get go. The old man was stubborn and loved to tell stories. Little by little I found out some things about him. He had two sons somewhere in Missouri that he was estranged from, so I never found out much about them. He had an old ‘95 Dodge pickup that he and Bo loved. They would come and sit in the back of the motel at the picnic table everyday until I came out and sat with them. Bo would come running to get this dog treat which Rodney said would make him fat.
Somewhere along the way I told him about O’Deans store, he and Bo would go on the weekends when he was open and buy tools. I told him he was never going to use them because we were too told to crawl under the car and work on it, because we probably couldn’t get back up.
When he first came here he could hardly walk from his room to his truck. So I started to get him to walk more and he started to feel better and move more. He went to the Kimball Clinic and got rid of fluid build up, and I’m sure that helped some too.
When we moved to an apartment with a full kitchen so he could cook more, I had to stop by and check on him and more so the dog. He always had mail for me to check on to see if it was junk or to pay. He was hard of hearing so I had to phone in his bus.
With insurance he would tell them to talk to me, so I took care of him as best I could, I wrote a lot of notes.
He rented an unfurnished apartment, I said I have a lot of beds and lamps, he wanted to pay, I said don’t worry about it, it will be cheap, how cheap...? $30.00! He always had to pay what a guy, they don’t make them like that anymore and if they do send them around!
I sure miss Rodney and Bo and I know some of you that got to know him will miss him. A great story teller, he was one in a million, there is a few tears on this page.
Rest in peace Rodney, your friend Leota Kant.
P.S. Bo dog is in Sidney looking for a new home. I think I will go get him!
