Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First

Jock Talk

The Kimball Recreation Area was a busy place this past Saturday with a softball tournament going on, the big Kimball Hospital Foundation Golf classic being held and some archery competition being held down by the Trap Club area. The number of vehicles and the number of people were amazing.

The next event scheduled now for the Four Winds Golf Course is a 4-person Yellow Ball Tournament and the date is August 25th, with a 1 p.m. shotgun start time. Cost is $240 per team or $60 per player, plus cart, if needed. For those of you who don’t know exactly what a Yellow Ball tournament is, Four Winds Pro Chad Wise explained it as “kind of a best ball scratch scramble that is handicapped”. Each team selects a player to play a certain hole with the yellow ball while the other 3 players scramble and the two scores are added up. Practice for the Fall Sports got underway in Nebraska high schools this past week and for Kimball, that includes football, volleyball, cross country and girl’s golf. Since I have been spending quite a bit of time out at the Four Winds Golf Course, I am aware of a larger than usual group of young ladies checked out for the Kimball High Girls’ Golf Team. New head coach, Luke Maas, has recruited a nice number of talented athletes who are going to give golf a try.

A couple of seniors in Lacy Klinkhammer and Sheridan Magninie, have switched over to golf, as has junior, Carli Wurdeman. Sophomores are Maddie Cook, Raven Johnson and Sam Bemis. Freshman, Payton Wise, is the most experienced of all, as she has competed for years in the Panhandle Junior Tour, as well as, other junior type tournaments. This could be an interesting year for Kimball High girl’s golf.

Coach Maas, who was a four-year golfer himself at Potter-Dix, said he doesn’t have a lot of time to get the team ready, as they open August 21, at Sidney and have four tournaments total in August, including August 23, at Bayard, 28th at Kimball and 30th at Creek Valley.
