Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First

Pave the trail fundraiser kick-off

The Kimball Community Trail sponsored by the Kimball Area Foundation Fund is well into Phase 1 of the project. There are three planning phases to the trail project:

Phase 1 is the portion of the trail south of the dam, currently under construction. The trail layout has almost been completed, with small layout changes being made following the recent rains. Trees have been planted, the dog park has been marked and locations for benches and shaded areas have been picked.

"I have been a regular visitor to dog parks for over 10 years and in 5 states, I support local businesses when and where I stop at the parks. I have met many owners who understand the importance of exercise and socialization for a happy, healthy and well-behaved dogs," Kimball Area Foundation Fund member Jean Gilbert said. "The parks are an opportunity for community members to meet and visit while their dogs play in a safe and controlled space. Good stewards of the parks even pick up an extra poo or two in order to keep the parks clean and disease free! The dog park will be a tremendous asset to Kimball and will, most likely, help to cut down on some of the dog problems the city currently sees."

Ground has been leveled for a parking lot on the southwest corner, along with a second parking lot on the southeast corner where the Remote Control Track is located. Even though the trail isn't paved, it has been graded and has a smooth walking or bicycling surface. Fundraising income from the community is needed for the trail to be paved with asphalt millings. Community members are invited to go out and walk or bike on the trail, become familiar with the project and help us raise the funds to complete the trail.

"The trail south of the Janicek Dam will be a welcome addition for the community. It will provide over a mile-long path on which folks can walk and ride their bicycles," City Administrator Dan Dean said. "The goal is to extend it to Eight Street near Evergreen Street to create a direct connection to the city streets."

Phase 2 will be acquiring and implementing a north entrance to the trail, with a trail spur and parking that will provide easy access from the city of Kimball. Committee members are currently looking at East 9th Street, allowing walkers and bikers to use the trail without having to drive anywhere.

Phase 3 is a second trail loop located on the north side of the city property. Plans are for it to be located on the north side of the dam, just south of the high school practice field. Connecting trails will link the north and south loops of the trail. This phase will be started once Phases 1 and 2 are completed. Goals are for Phase 3 to be started within the next year.

Andy Bremer, Kimball Police Chief, said, "I believe the Kimball Community Trail will be an asset to the community."
