Students pull together in a big way to lend support to community, local family

Kimball High School students picked up around businesses on Tuesday, May 1, to give back to the community for all the support the school receives. They combined the hard work with a fundraiser and a meal.

Seniors put together salads, baked goods, and grilled hot dogs for the entire school for lunch before being sent around town to clean up.

Once the students were finished with their meals they met with their groups and were sent off to their designated clean up sites. Everyone worked hard for two hours as some seniors and staff were getting ready for the egg Russian roulette, the fundraiser.

After the Civics class heard the news that Mrs. Nikki Kilgore is battling breast cancer, they decided to raise money to help the Kilgore family.

Egg Russian Roulette was a huge success last year for a similar goal so students used the fundraiser again this year.

Cups were made for each staff member and senior classmate. Students and staff were able to "vote" for the Egg Russian Roulette teams by putting money into the cup with the names of who they wanted to see in the contest.

Mrs. Ferguson had snacks, drinks, and bracelets made for Nikki. These items were available in her room for purchase.

Additionally, students had the chance to wear hats in class for two dollars a day, and staff members were able to wear jeans for five dollars a day if they chose to.

Mr. Brashear, Mr. Hoffman, Amber Birkhofer and Justine Heeg had the most money in their cups winning the money and being chosen for the contest.

The students piled into the gym as the ones above began the competition. Mr. Hoffman never ran into an unboiled egg the entire time, while everyone else had gotten at least one of them.

While waiting for Nikki Kilgore, Byron Rowley walked down the steps to begin everyone's favorite carnival ride. Byron directed the direction the ride was going as everyone shouted. Cheerleaders led the student body in fun cheers and class chants. The students had fun interacting with seniors during this time.

Nikki Kilgore walked into the gym with her husband, Kevin Kilgore, as Paycen Harroun handed him a check with $2,500 that the school had raised for the family.

Though Kimball is a small town, when someone needs help, everyone in the community pulls together, including students at Kimball Jr. Sr. High School.

"I am excited about how much everybody participated. I am always amazed at how our community pulls together to help," said Mrs. Ferguson.
