Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First

Jock Talk

Kimball hosted their Invitational Track Meet this past Saturday and it was a success. The weather was a bit cool and a bit windy at times, but overall, not bad for Western Nebraska at this time of year.

A salute to Kimball Activities Director, Ken Smith, for organizing everything, and he and his staff, for keeping things running smoothly. The Kimball track and facilities were in great condition. My special thanks to Sandy Faden and Mo Hanks for providing me with all of the results so we can share them with you readers.

One has to marvel at the Pine Bluffs athletic success they are having in all of their sports, including track, as both their boys and girls won team titles handily. They have good participation and have some outstanding young athletes.

Two new records were set Saturday and both by Kimball boys. Paycen Harroun set a new record in the pole vault of 12’6”, bettering the old mark of Kimball’s Trent Rutledge, and Brandy Kilgore ran a new meet record in the 110 meter high hurdles, with his time of 15.9, bettering the old mark of 16.14 ran by Drew Gilliland of Mitchell.

The season is off and running and, of course, that means nasty weather is coming right along with it. Most of our area teams are to compete at the Bayard C-D meet today (Thursday) and the weather forecast is not very good. I guess we will see what transpires. The Kimball track schedule shows the Longhorns to go to Creek Valley on Monday, then a break until April 14, when the Horns go to Morrill for the WTC meet.

-------------------------------

The Kimball High boy golfers added a dual-type tournament at Gering to their schedule this past Tuesday and Coach Chad Wise was going to take 9 golfers. The Chase County and Bayard tournaments have already been postponed, so next tournament looks to be at Mitchell on April 10th.

-------------------------------

The MAC All Conference Basketball selections have been announced and MaKenna Dahlgrin of Banner County was first team, as was Audrey Juelfs of Potter-Dix. Honorable Mention went to Trinity Langley and Payge Hoffman of Potter-Dix, along with, Courtney Knisley of Banner County. The lone boy to be recognized from our immediate area is Dylan Nielsen of Potter-Dix, given Honorable Mention.

By the way, the Four Winds Golf Course is open for play. In fact, it opened one day earlier than what Jeremy Williams asked me to tell you readers.
