BPW recommends engineering proposal for landfill expansion

The Kimball Landfill is one step closer to the needed cell expansion as the Board of Public Works voted to recommend an engineering proposal from Golder and Associates of Lakewood, Colo.

The proposal was one of two received for the project, which is not a construction bid, but rather a proposal to oversee the process from bidding the job, assuring quality construction, reporting to both the City of Kimball and the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality and overseeing all aspects of construction through completion.

The Board also discussed construction bid specifications, particularly to ensure that costs will not exceed the bid amount for the project, which is expected to reach $1.6 million.

“When we first dug that (cell) we ended up eating $30,000,” Landfill supervisor Jim Schulte said.

The problem with the former project was a contractor issue and City Administrator, Dan Dean, said that a provision will be included with the upcoming construction bid that requires the contractor to provide insurance so similar issues will not be repeated.

Golder’s proposal totaled $43,729 and that from Baker and Associates came in significantly higher, at $75,900.

The matter was included on the Kimball City Council agenda for Tuesday, Jan. 16.
