We got the High School Winter Sports Season officially off and running this past week with the Kimball High Wrestlers hosting Bayard for a dual and then going to Akron for Tournament action this past Saturday. The Basketball teams hosted their own 4-team tournament and I wish I could say all went well, but certainly not for the Reader family.

One year ago, Alex Reader went down in a game at Morrill that cost her a junior season of her favorite sport. Saturday evening, her sister, Kate, also in her junior season, went down with the same type injury to her right knee that will cost her the entire season as she awaits a date for major surgery. All I can say is “this is not fair to the Reader family, and it is not fair to Coach Chauncey Pedersen, and the Kimball High girl’s basketball team”. Kate was a returning Miss Everything to the Lady Longhorn program. IT IS NOT FAIR!

The Reader sisters had already once again set up to raise money for the Team Ashtyn Foundation, which would raise money for local childhood cancer families. They did this last year and raised around $3,000. It was set to go with pledges of dollar amounts for Alex shooting 3 pointers and Kate free throws. Now, with Kate out of action, Alex is going to step-up and take on both roles of 3 pointers and free throws. Any questions, just ask a member of the Reader family.

Two things I must remark on after sitting through a lot of games this past weekend at the Kimball High gym. The popcorn is lots better this year! The lights at the Kimball gym, which I used to think were the brightest of any gym I followed games to, are now about the dimmest of any gym we play in. Kimball Activities Director, Ken Smith, agreed with me. I wonder where they threw the old lights when they replaced them, and was wondering if we could still find them and get them back in use?

I made note of the Morrill girls and the number of young freshman players they are going with. They have some very good young ladies and watch out for this program, not only this year, but for the next few years.

Potter-Dix is simply fighting the numbers. They have 3 really good senior players in their girl’s program, but the lack of depth takes a toll. It was kind of cool to see the hometown coaching staff of Head Coach, Lance Juelfs, and Assistant, Jordan Ottoson, plus dad, Lane Juelfs. Another Potter-Dix grad, Luke Maas, is now on the Kimball girl’s coaching staff.

During Tournament play, PA Announcer, Greg Robinson, was keeping me updated on the score of the UCF and Memphis football game, and how coach Scott Frost’s team was doing. Also, of course, the announcement that Coach Frost was coming home to coach the Nebraska Huskers. He also gave me feeds on how the Nebraska women’s volleyball team was winning out. I love people that know how to handle all of this new technology.

Big Mike Daum and his South Dakota State Jack Rabbits won over Missouri State 99-97 in overtime this past week and Mike ended with 26 points and 7 rebounds. He was 6 of 15 on 3 pointers.

The Kimball Sports Calendar shows junior high girl’s basketball at Michell at 4 p.m. today (Thursday). Kimball High boys and girls basketball at Grant Friday night with the JV games starting at 4 p.m., followed by girls varsity and boys varsity. A Hog Feed by the FFA chapter will feed you hungry fans. Also, Junior High girls basketball at Sidney Saturday morning at 9 a.m. and the Kimball High Wrestlers will be at the Banner County Invite starting at 9:30 a.m.
