Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First

Letter to the Editor - Life in a small town

I have lived in Kimball for most of my adult life, and am a proud resident of both Nebraska and our town. There is so much to love about life here – we know each other well, we are passionate about our beliefs and sports teams and are there for each other when times get tough. But as I have gotten older, I have found it harder to get help from service people when I need it. And as an elderly woman, I wonder sometimes if anybody is really listening.

For the past several months, my house has been plagued with pigeons. Don’t laugh. It has been terrible. They built nests by tearing up part of my siding and took residence, doing damage to my soffits, congregating there day and night, and peppering my property with big pigeon “gifts”.

I went to the City offices and was told there is no pigeon problem in Kimball. OK. Thanks. I tried to contact several contractors to help and my calls were never returned. Even after trying several times and leaving messages, I was just ignored. I began to feel very alone in my problem.

Then, luckily, somebody suggested I contact John Barrett. I was leery, because I have had no luck so far. But one morning, I found myself parked next to his truck downtown, and I called on my bravery and knocked on his window and told him my problem.

He said, “Do you mind waiting until this afternoon?” I was shocked. I had already waited months. I said no, but I don’t know if I really believed he would show up. He not only showed up with his coworker Joey, but they took care of the problem in under 90 minutes with good humor and a willingness to work hard. He also charged an incredibly fair price.

I feel so lucky that I happened upon John and am so grateful that I did. He has restored a goodly portion of my faith in our little town.
