Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First

Jock Talk

The golf season is winding down but there is still one big event left for the members of the Kimball Four Winds Men and Thursday Night Men’s Leagues and it will take place this Sunday at 1 p.m., at the Four Winds Golf Course.

All members of both leagues are invited to sign up for a scramble that will tee it up at 1 p.m., for the season ending event with additional money being put up by both leagues as well as Four Winds Pro Chad Wise. The course in awesome condition and the weather is forecast as being near perfect. The fall colors are showing on the trees and all golfers are urged to turn out and support your leagues, and the Four Winds Golf Course.

The Four Winds Men League title was decided this past week and can you believe it, the two man team of Keith Prunty and Terry Lovesee pulled a three-peat with their third consecutive claim of the title. They won the Monday night title defeating the team of Chad Wise and Gene Golding to advance to the championship where they eliminated the team of Kevin Thomas and Randy Bohac who had won over the team of Tom O’Brien and Andrew Brown. Congrats on the win and on the Three-Peat!

On a personal note, I am truly missing my golfing as I nurse a bad back. It has been determined that I am in need of back surgery that is scheduled for tomorrow (Friday) in Ft. Collins. The surgeon assures me he will have me back on the golf course before long.

My old back, and this iswhat Dr. Tim Wirt told me is my problem, that I’m old, has also limited me in attending other local sports events. I watched the Kimball-Hershey football game this past Friday from the driver’s seat of my van parked along the southwest side of the field at Keith Staehr Stadium. Not the best seat in the house and with our low volume PA system, a bit hard to know exactly what was going on.

I can always get a true test of what happened when I pick up my copy of the final stats, thanks to Mr. Hanks, who does such a good job of compiling the stats for the Longhorns with assistance from Mr. McManigal. I assume you good fans know by now that Kimball lost 35-0. As reported last week, the Horns are so short of players and I counted 15 suited. Lots of freshmen and sophomores in starting roles. Lots of others from the 23 listed out for various reasons like injury and eligibility. Lack of numbers is one reason school officials were set to discuss a possibility of going to the eight man game at Monday evening’s meeting.

Even in a shutout loss, the Longhorns still had some standout performances and it seemed to me that junior Zane Anthony was involved in about every play all night long. He had three catches for 40 yards and also had an interception along with leading the tackle chart with five solo stops and eight assists. He almost took the interception to the house.

It was good to see Izaac Reuter back on the field as he has been nursing a knee problem and the talented junior completed seven passes for 74 yards. Jake Jenkins had 50 yards rushing on 13 carries. Colton Mielke was back after suffering an arm injury the week prior and he shows such good quickness and can fill any spot needed.

Others high on the tackle charts were Corey Travis with six tackles and three assists, and Paycen Harroun with four solos and five assists, Jake Jenkins also had an interception. A pleasant highlight to me was the punting of freshman Christian Allen-Van Pelt. He really was booming some long ones and ended up with a 38 yard average on four punts.

The Horns are on the road to Bridgeport tomorrow (Friday) night and will have another tough task ahead of them as the Dogs won over Bayard 24-23 last Friday.

---------------------------------------------

Other events on the schedule for tonight (Thursday) is a cross country trip to Gothenburg with a 2 p.m. start time, junior high football at home with Bayard this evening at 4 p.m., and a full slate of volleyball at Burns beginning at 4 p.m.
