Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First

Junior High program suffers lack of numbers

Kimball has very limited athletes this year for Jr. high football, when we are all ready to go we have 20 kids out. We got all the boys out in the jr. high with the exception of 7 or 8. Just not a lot of boys in these 7th and 8th grade classes. This year we will combine to make one team and only get one game with our lack of numbers.

We had our first game Sept. 5 at home against Hemingford. This was played as a 8 /11 man game. When Kimball had the ball we played 11 man and when Hemingford had the ball it was 8. It is fun to play a little 8 man football. It brings back old memories of high school. We lost the game 36-6. This game was played a week earlier than last year which gave us a week less of preparation and it showed. We weren’t ready to take the field at that point. But we played hard and played till the end. We as coaches saw a lot of potential out there, but we would ourselves lined up in the wrong places. As the game went on we got better and better. Our lone touchdown was scored by Cole Heim when he picked off a pass and ran it back 40 yards. Hemingford had a nice little team, I’m positive they will win some more ballgames this year.

Sept 12 we had a home game vs. Bridgeport. They also had a nice team bringing about 25 players. We were only able to suit up 15 for this one with some injuries. Bridgeport handed us a loss 48-0. We just started off flat and it continued all first half. At half time the score was 40-0. Our special teams didn’t do a very good job covering a punt. We need to go back to the basics and block and tackle better. We play Mitchell next Thursday so we will finally get some time to work on some things in practice. The kids need to stay positive and continue to get better at the little things.
