Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First

Jock Talk

A turnout of 18 golfers participated in Sunday’s One-Person Scramble held at the Four Wind Golf Course, and Mitch Brown emerged the winner with his round of 53, using a 100% handicap system for all golfers. Dustin Bowron was runner-up with his round of 54 with Dave Lukassen 3rd with the same score of 54 and Doran Bush was 4th with 55. Those running the tournament would have like to have seen a larger turnout, but still felt it was a success and the weather was nice.

More tournament play on tap this Sunday as Four Winds Pro Chad Wise will hold the Two-Person Triple Play tournament he dedicated to his late father. This is a tournament that involves not only the golfer’s skill, but also some planning as to who takes what shot and when. Golfers will play 6 holes of scramble, 6 holes of best ball and 6 holes of alternate shot. This is where each team has to scheme as to which golfer will tee off and on which hole, etc. Lots of fun with handicap involved and different ages using different tee boxes. The cost is small and the fun is large. A 12 noon shotgun start and everyone is welcome. Call the Pro Shop today to get entered.

Also, at the conclusion of play on Sunday, the drawing for the winners of the raffle being held to bring in additional money to go towards helping with maintenance for the Four Winds Golf Course will be held. Tickets are still on sale at just $10 each and there are some great golfing prizes to be won. Buy your tickets today to help a great cause and for a chance to win a great prize.

High School sports are rolling along and Kimball High has a steady schedule of events taking place. Today (Thursday), the girl’s golf team is at Mitchell and Tuesday they go to Gering. The Lady Longhorn volleyball team is at home this afternoon hosting Potter-Dix and Mitchell for a varsity only, three team event. Saturday they will be at Gordon/Rushville for tournament play and Tuesday (Sept. 12) they are at Hemingford for a triangular match also involving Gordon- Rushville.

The Kimball High cross-country team will host their Invitational meet Friday at the Four Winds Golf Course with a start time of 1 p.m. You fans are urged to come out and support the runners, which also includes the junior high and junior varsity runners. Remember, cross-country is Far Out! And back.

The first home football game is also tomorrow (Friday) evening with Mitchell coming to town for the 7 p.m. kickoff. The Longhorns need your support, so be there. The Booster Club will be feeding you fans, and I should also mention that tonight (Thursday), the sophomore class will be serving up Walking Tacos at the volleyball matches. Good food for good cause.

On Monday (Sept. 11), the JV football team is at Sidney for a 5 p.m. kickoff and the junior high volleyball teams will host Sidney for 4 p.m. matches. The junior high football team will host Bridgeport this coming Tuesday evening with kickoff at 4 p.m. This should give you sports fans plenty of action to entertain you as we support the young athletes of our community.

I had a nice talk with Kimball High Coach, Gene Mohr, at the volleyball match last week. He was excited about the Kimball JV football win at Burns last week with Kimball winning 40-20.

He is also working on getting Brady Kilgore recognition on the state level for the long fumble recovery touchdown run he had last year. If it goes in at 99 yards, he will tie a state record and if it goes in at 104 yards, which is what Coach Mohr says it actually was, it will be an outright new record. We will see how this plays out. After a very good sophomore year of football, Brady is doing cross-country this year because of concussions he experienced in football.
