Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First

Jock Talk

The High School Fall Sports action opened up full force this past week with Kimball High competing in Girl’s Golf, Cross Country, and Football. You will find stories on all in this week’s Observer Sports.

---------------------------------

I want to say congrats to Lila Moore for her career best round of golf at the Western Trails Conference and Bayard Golf Invite. The Kimball High senior shot 108 to finish seventh in WTC play and ninth in the Bayard Invite on a day where both events were held in conjunction. Congrats to Kimball as a team as they finished third in WTC with their 575 score and fifth in the Bayard Invite.

---------------------------------

Congrats also going out to Kimball’s Thomas Lenzen who finished in the top 25 medal group at the Scottsbluff Cross Country Classic race held at Riverview Golf Course. In the opening event of the season, Thomas ran 24 in 19.48. Congrats to banner County High runner Cheyenne Knisley for running 25 in the girl’s division for a top 25 medal win with her time of 25.04.

------------------------------------------------

The Kimball High football team made the trip to North Platte on a Thursday evening to play Centura on a neutral site and lost 28-0. I listened to the game carried by KSID Radio and the Longhorns certainly did some good things, but spent too much time on the field with their defense. Heard good things from Byron Rowley who is back at Kimball High again. He was the Runza Player of the Game for Kimball with 15 tackles. Izaac Reuter threw the ball pretty well and had some passes dropped that sounded like they were catchable. The ground game was lacking.

Another long trip this week with Kimball going to Gordon this Friday night. Gordon fell to state ranked Valentine 51-6 this past week. On the subject of long trips, the Horns also go to Imperial, Bridgeport, and yes, to Valentine this season. Home games are Mitchell, Hershey, Bayard, and St. Pats. By the way, tomorrow night’s game at Gordon is listed as a 6 p.m. our time kickoff.

------------------------------------------------

Other events on the Kimball Sports Schedule show the Lady Longhorn Volleyball Team opening at home with Bridgeport tonight (Thursday) with matches beginning at 4 p.m. On Tuesday, September 5, they go back to Bridgeport for varsity action only.

------------------------------------------------

The cross country team will run at Gering this Friday and the girls golf team will be at Chappell today (Thursday) for the Creek Valley Tournament.

--------------------------------

A final reminder, is the One-Person Scramble being held at the Four Winds Golf Course this Sunday, September 3. You can set your own tee time. Four Winds Pro Chad Wise is asking for an entry deadline of August 29, so give him a call at the Pro Shop today. Entry fee is $75 and it will be a 100 percent handicap format.

Also, don’t forget the two-person triple play tournament coming up next week on September 10, where each two person team plays six holes of scramble, six holes of alternate shot, and six holes of best ball. Lots of fun and you pick when you are going to play which choice of the format and which player tees off first. There will be a 12 noon shotgun start.

Another reminder that all season memberships at the Four Winds are now 50 percent off through the balance of the year. And please purchase your raffle tickets for the drawing for really nice prizes to help towards the maintenance costs of keeping our Four Winds Course in top condition. The drawing will be held at the conclusion of the Triple Play Tournament on September 10. Get your tickets at the Pro Shop for just $10 each.

The golfing Greenwood family can provide me with a story almost every week and it was Phyllis who came up with this week’s story. Playing the Women’s Senior Tournament at Gering’s Monument Shadows Course this past Monday, Phyllis carded a Hole-in-One on the 13 hole using her seven wood on the 101 yard hole. This was her second Hole in One as she got her first back in 2015 at Kimball on the number 16 hole. Yep, she was using that seven wood then too. Better hang on to that club. Now she has equalled the feat of son Michael and grandson Jordan who both have a pair of hole-in-ones. Congrats Phyllis and I am sure number three is coming soon.
