Local organizations turn receipts into cash

The Receipts for Cash program at Main Street Market has awarded thousands of dollars to local organizations and as more organizations begin collecting receipts, there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight.

This program began as a way to encourage individuals associated with charitable organizations to shop locally. Now that most citizens are saving their receipts for their favorite causes, the program has become one more way that local businesses, organizations and citizens work together for our common good.

Here’s how it works: Organizations collect the receipts and add up the totals prior to sales tax.

Totals must be for grocery, meat, produce, deli, bakery, dairy, frozen, health and beauty or liquor. Lottery tickets and money orders do not qualify.

As receipts are totaled they are bundled together and labeled with the total for the bundle and when a minimum of $100,000 in receipt totals is collected, they are turned into the Main Street Market Manager or the Corporate Manager.

Checks are issued to the store, and the organization is asked to participate in a photo.

Most local churches are currently participating in this program, as are the Friends of the Goodhand, the Plains Historical Society, the Friends of the Kimball Public Library and a charitable organization for the Kimball Public Schools.
