Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First

Jock Talk

The Kimball Junior Golf Program has been busy attending Panhandle Junior Golf Tour events. At Torrington in the boy’s 10-12 grade division, Tristen Zitek emerged the winner with his round of 69 with Dillon Wise second with 71 as both shot under par with some great golf played. Tayten Zitek was also a winner in the grade 6-7 division with a 51 over nine holes. Payton Wise once again moved up to play with the high school age girls and finished third with her round of 96.

On Monday of this week Kimball took several of their young golfers to the Scottsbluff Country Club and Tristen Zitek shot 78 to finish third in the high school boys class with Zane Anthony fourth with 79 and Dillon Wise fifth with 80. Andrew McCloud shot 94 and Brendan Walker 96. Payton Wise was fourth in the girl’s division with 94. Tayten Zitek won the 6-7 grade division for boys with 74 over nine holes. Cole Henton was second in the next age group up with his 60 over nine holes. In the six hole division for the younger kids, Kaymen Lusche was a winner for Kimball with his score of 36 and Kyler Lushe was second one stroke back at 37. Bansyn Kiefer was fifth with 50, and Mercedes Bartles shot 98.

Zane Anthony made the long trip to Beemer, Nebraska last week to play in the Nebraska State Junior Amateur and hand some highs and lows in the two days he competed. The weather was hot and humid. The course is nice, short, and has very small greens. In the highs and lows department, Zane was just three over with three holes left the first day and ended up with an 82. On day two it was more of the same shooting well and then having troubles, but overall he said it was a good experience and he said he will try it again next year.

In reviewing a story that got cut from last week’s sports one of the highlights this year from the Vince’s Corner Golf Tournament was when organizer Henry Heeg addresses the 128 golfers to ask their opinion on giving a contribution to the family of Kimball’s Erin Aerni who was killed when hit by an automobile while she was out running. In years past the golfers have given to the Wounded Warriors organization but the proposal to vary this year was met by an enthusiastic approval by the golfers. “Many of our golfers even gave back their personal winnings.” Henry said. Sorry also that several more pictures of some of our former Kimball golfers were cut due to lack of room. It’s such a pleasure to get to welcome any of our former friends back home every year to play in this popular event.

Another reminder of the Kimball Hospital Foundation four person scramble coming up Aug. 5 at the Four Winds. Kerry Ferguson is asking anyone interested in playing to have your entry forms turned in no later than July 21 to assure you the proper size of the beautiful wind jacket for every player. Lunch and registration takes place at 11 a.m. with a shotgun start at 12 noon. Your $75 entry fee gets you 18 holes of golf, lunch and supper, the wind jacket, and lots of raffle and flag prizes. Also a putting contest for cash prizes. The proceeds from this year’s tournament will help purchase four new examination tables for Kimball Health Services.

I received word that Madison Biesecker, former Kimball High standout student/athlete who played volleyball at Southeast Community College in Beatrice last year, will be expanding her athletic abilities this year to include basketball as well as volleyball. Us fans got to watch Madison preform in both sports, along with track and field, while she was at Kimball High and we know she can do both quite well.

Southeast Community College in Beatrice has attracted several Kimball High athletes and this is where Jordan Greenwood has signed to continue his golf this fall. I also got notice from the school this week that Ireland Olson, another young lady who played all three sports at Kimball High, was named to the Dean’s list for her Outstanding Academic work in the class room where she is studying in the medical field to advance into nursing. Congrats to all.

This Saturday night at the Four Winds Golf Course they are going to have a nine hole fun night. Everyone is asked to make tee time from 4-6 p.m. and the cost is $5 per person. It will be a two-person team scramble. The results will be posted at the Pro Shop and on Facebook on Sunday Morning.
