Kimball golfers win again

The Kimball High boy's golf team kept their wining streak alive with a victory at the Scottsbluff Tournament Monday. No problem for the Longhorns as they captured Division Two at the Scottsbluff Country Club with a 319 score, 54 strokes better than runner-up Chadron, with their 373 total. Behind the front two were Ogallala 386, Mitchell 398, Scottsbluff JV 413 and Morrill 440. There were 11schools represented in Division Two but only six schools with complete teams.

On a rather windy, but warm, day, the Longhorns took care of business, claiming the top four individual places and placing all five of their golfers in the top ten medal group. Jordan Greenwood claimed medalist honors with his individual winning round of 38-35=73, followed by Zane Anthony in second place with a round of 40-40=80, Dillon Wise was third with his round of 39-43=82 and Andrew McCloud was fourth with a round of 43-41-84. Izaac Reuter finished ninth with a round of 43-45=88.

En route to his winning round, Greenwood had three birdies, four bogies, 11 pars and missed parring the course with a bogie on the final hole.

"I thought the course was in excellent condition, but the greens were very fast. I missed three putts that were three feet or less," he said.

The Horns would have fared well in Division One as well, as only one Class A school shot a better team score with North Platte winning the Division One with a score of 308. Kimball would have won over three large Wyoming schools, plus the bigger Nebraska schools in the nine-school field. Greenwood's round of 73 matched the winning round of Division One as well, as Kyle Zimbelman of North Platte claimed medalist honors in the larger division with his round of 73.

With the Longhorns running their record to four straight wins, coach Chad Wise said, "I am happy with the win. Jordan played very well, but our other golfers could have scored better. I would have been more pleased with a score of 310. I will admit the greens were much faster than we have been used to. We had too many double bogies on the day. It is a tougher course with the fast greens and with all of the trees, but we'll take the win."

A busy weekend for the Kimball team as they travel to defend their conference championships of a year ago. Tomorrow (Friday) they are at the Oregon Trail golf course in Sutherland for the SPVA conference tournament and Saturday they are back at Mitchell for the Western Trails conference tournament. The schedule at Mitchell is set for an 8 a.m. start time, and all golfers may be battling not only the courses, and the other teams, but also some possible very cold weather this weekend. After this weekend, only the Kimball tournament on May 4 remains before district on May 15 at Cambridge.

Kimball was able to play three JV players at Scottsbluff also on Monday with Brendan Walker shooting a round of 50-42=92, Jaren Winstrom 57-59=116 and Ethan Greenwood 69-62=131.
