Friends and Neighbors: Kyla Ramsey

One Kimball County youth chosen as a finalist in the National American Miss Nebraska Pageant.

Kyla Ramsey, 11, of Dix will travel this month to Omaha to compete in the pre-teen division of the pageant, according to a recent news release.

Kyla, the daughter of Crystal Ramsey, has been an active participant in youth basketball, junior cheer, Destination Imagination and 4-H in the Colts and Fillies group.

She also enjoys riding four-wheelers and horses and she has volunteered to hang flags at the Dix Cemetery when needed.

The winner of the pageant will receive a $1,000 cash award in addition to the crown and bouquet, and air transportation to the national pageant in California, where she will receive a tour of Hollywood and two VIP tickets to Disneyland.

Dedicated to celebrating future leaders of the nation and providing those future leaders with life-long skills, National American Miss Pageants awards $1.5 million annually, as well as, scholarships and other prizes.

Unlike other pageants, National American Miss Pageants are kept age appropriate in that girls under the age of 12 are not allowed to wear makeup and there is no swimsuit competition.

Instead, this pageant focuses on poise, presentation and inner beauty with emphasis placed on developing self confidence, good sportsmanship and setting and achieving personal goals.

Kyla began participating in this pageant two years ago and received an invitation to return for the 2017 pageant, according to her mom.

Competitions for Kyla will include a community service project, donating books and supplies to kids in need, an interview, a personal introduction and a formal wear competition, which all participants will do.

Additionally, Kyla has chosen to add a casual wear option that will allow her the chance to showcase her personal style on stage, complete with an opportunity to explain why her style works best for her.

She added a photo shoot option and an actress option, during which she will act out a line during a "commercial" on stage.

Kyla is looking forward to the pageant, which also offers seminars to participants on topics that affect youth every day, such as bullying and social media safety.

Ramsey's upcoming adventure is sponsored by Pizza Hut, Shear Images and Hometown Hardware, as well as, by family and friends.

"She likes the pageant because it works with the important stuff, public speaking, interviews and application processes," Crystal said. "It is not so much about outer beauty, it is more about personal gain."
