Renee Thomas, leader of the Gering Chapter of The Well Armed Woman, received $4,576.89 in grant money from the National Rifleman's Association. Thomas applied for the annual grant with her TWAW chapter in mind and accepted the grant money on behalf of the chapter during the NRA banquet in Scottsbluff on Saturday, Jan. 28. The money will go towards the purchase of training and educational material for women shooters from across the Panhandle who are members of the Gering Chapter.
The Well Armed Woman Shooting Chapters, founded in Arizona in 2013 by Carrie Lightfoot, were started for women who want to learn about firearms in a non-intimidating environment and meet women of like-minded interests who are at least 21 years of age and legally able to possess a gun.
The Gering Chapter, started in August 2015 by Renee Thomas (NRA and TWAW Certified Instructor), has been an inviting and educational resource to more than 20 women on a monthly basis.
The Gering Chapter meets the last Saturday of every month at the Sure Shot Gun Range at 2pm, where the topics of discussion change every month to meet the needs of the members. Members work on everything from basic gun handling skills, gun cleaning, ammunition, laws, and situational awareness; just to name a few. After a one hour educational meeting, members then proceed to the gun range for an hour of shooting drills.
TWAW has helped women become more confident in themselves as gun owners, educated them, equipped them with necessary skills, and empowered them to be the best they can be. The organization has challenged members on the range with shooting skills, and built so many friendships in the process.
"I truly believe it is important for a woman to know how to protect herself, and every month, I strive to bring the members the best information and challenges that I can to prepare the ladies for anything that might happen to them; whether they are at home, shopping, traveling, or at work," Thomas said. "Being prepared and having the skills they need to survive is extremely important. Let's face it, the world isn't a safe place and there is no such thing as having too much training or too much education when it comes to firearms."
