Kimball boys, Potter-Dix girls secure wins

The Kimball High Boys and the Potter-Dix Girls emerged winners in contests between the two schools this past week. The Potter-Dix girls won out 51-41 over Kimball with the Lady Coyotes out scoring the Lady Longhorns 14-7 in the final period to come out on top. The Potter-Dix boys are in a rebuilding year and Kimball had no problem winning out 64-14.

The girls game was a game of two-halves as Kimball jumped out to a 13-4 early lead and was ahead 15-9 at the quarter break. Potter-Dix went on a 13-0 run to start the second quarter and took a 22-15 lead before senior sharp shooter Alexis Lulf hit two treys and scored on a hard drive to the basket and closed out the first half with yet another 3 pointer to keep Kimball on top 28-26 at intermission.

Lulf nailed 5 treys in the first half while scoring 17 points, but Coyote Coach Jeff Einspahr went to a one-on-one defense of Lulf in the second half and needed her scoring on the night as they shut her down with no points in the second half play. While Lulf ended up with 17 points, Alexus Rozelle took scoring honors on the night to lead the Coyotes to victory with her 20 points. PD had 3 players in double figures with 6'0" junior Trinity Langley scoring 11 and Dawson Sharman tallied 10. Audrey Juelfs finished with 6, and Payge Hoffman had 4 for the winners.

Behind Lulf in the scoring for Kimball were Kate Reader with 14 including 1 trey. Justine Heeg had 5 with 1 trey, Carli Wurdeman and Hannah Biesecker both had 2 points and Jannel Fiehtner had 1. Kimball shot better from behind the arc than on regular field goals making 7/19 on 3 pointers for 37% and were only 7/28 on 2 point tries for 25% They also pulled 24 rebounds, with Reader having 10 for a double-double night. Only 4 steals and 5 assists for Kimball alone with 23 turnovers and 22 fouls. It was a dismal night of foul shooting as Kimball was 6/18 and Potter-Dix 13/29.

The Kimball boys came out strong with Izaac Reuter hitting the first shot of the ball game to score from the base line. Jordan Greenwood followed with three consecutive steals for layins, and Colton Mielke's 15 footer made it 10-0 very quickly. The Horns led 20-2 at the quarter break and 42-7 by half time. The Kimball coaches went to their bench early and often and the starters saw very limited court time in the second half, but got some outstanding bench play as everyone suited got plenty of playing time with 11 players getting into the scoring act.

Jordan Greenwood finished with 12 points with 1 trey. Jaden Withrow hit a pair of treys and ended up with 8 points, Brady Kilgore had 8, Ed Barnes had a big night with 13 points including 1 trey and was top rebounder with 5 along with Reuter also with 5 rebounds and 4 points. Brandon Barker had 6, Colton Mielke 5, Corey Travis, Kyle Spicer, Seth Krafczik, and Zane Anthony all had 2 points each.

Kimball shot 51% from the field and were 2/2 at the foul line, had 24 rebounds, 10 steals with Greenwood hawking 5 and Ryan Soper 4, and charted just 10 turnovers and 10 personal fouls. Tyrus Gawith was high for the Coyotes with 8 points, Dylan Nielsen had 4 and Connor Williams 2.

The only junior varsity action on the night was a two-quarter boy's game won by Kimball 31-10. For Kimball, Corey Travis had 8, Brendan Walker 6, Jacob Withrow 4, Jaren Winstrom 4, Grant Hickman 3, Thomas Lenzen 2, Austin Lulf 2, and Brayden Tyan 2.

Sheign Krafczik led Potter-Dix with 7, Terell Gray had 2, and Michael Steele 1.
