Kimball boys improve to 4-0

With weekend wins over Perkins County and Morrill, Kimball High boys are now 4-0 on the young basketball season. The Horns battled to a hard fought 59-54 win over visiting Perkins County Friday evening and won at Morrill Saturday night 77-49.

In the win over Perkins County, Jordan Greenwood got the Horns rolling hitting a three ball on his first shot and then converting a layin after stealing a ball from a Grant ball handler and just like that it was 5-0, but almost as quick, the talented Kimball senior got 2 fouls and spent most of the first half on the bench. Izaac Reuter joined him early, and Corey Travis had 3 fouls by half time and Edward Barnes 2. Thanks to a trey by Colton Mielke as time ran out in the opening quarter, Kimball held a slim 12-11 lead at the break.

In the second period, sophomore Zane Anthony carried the load hitting 3 treys along with a steal and basket for 11 points and Kimball outscored the Grant boys 20-10 to maintain a 32-21 lead going into intermission.

Greenwood for limited court time in the 3rd period as the Kimball coaches wanted to be sure he was still available in the closing minutes, but he hit one of his patented 3 point fielders and another 16 footer and although they were out-scored 18-14 in the third period they still led 46-39 entering the final 8 minutes. Greenwood opened the final period exactly like he started the game with a trey and a steal for a layin to open it up to a 51-36 margin. Things got a bit tense down the stretch as the normally good shooting Kimball team from the foul line missed the front end of 3 straight one-on-ones, and ended up going 2 for 10 from the foul line for the game, making their first free throw on the night with 20 seconds to play and getting the second one to fall with 10 seconds left. Brandon Barker came up with a steal to end the game and preserve the 59-54 victory.

Despite limited amount of court time, Greenwood still led Kimball scoring with 15 points hitting 2 treys. Jaden Withrow was his steady self with 11 points and 1 trey along with a team high 8 rebounds. Zane Anthony finished with 11 points with 3 treys. Brandon Barker had 10 points with 1 trey. Colton Mielke had 9 points with 1 trey and also pulled 6 rebounds. Izaac Reuter, who also sat out several minutes with foul problems, had 3 points on his trey.

Kimball shot the long ball well hitting on 9 of 32 three point attempts. They were 24/60 from the field, and as mentioned, only 2/10 at the line. They had 33 rebounds, 5 steals, 6 assists, 5 turnovers, and 21 fouls. Perkins County had 3 three point field goals, were 9/21 at the line, and had 18 fouls. Scoring for the Plainsmen were Charles Johnson with 15, Michael Beck 12, Miles Lagier 10, Bailey Schrotberger 9, Spencer Ross 5, and Tyler Thelander 3.

In the win at Morrill, Greenwood opened the scoring with a layin and it was a Jordan Greenwood career night as he put 35 points in the score book before leaving the game with 7 minutes to play. It was an exhibition night for the talented and hard working senior as he hit 3 treys and was a perfect 10 for 10 at the foul line. He also had 4 rebounds and 3 steals plus 2 assists and only 1 turnover. His 35 points puts him into the top ten of the Kimball High School records for points scored in a single game and he did it for the most part in 3 quarters of play.

The Kimball coaches were using lots of players in the win at Morrill with Jaden Withrow scoring 12 with 1 trey, going 5/8 from the field along with 4 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 steals, and 1 assist. Colton Mielke with 10 points hitting 2 of 3 three point attempts going 4/7 on field goals. Izaac Reuter had 8, Zane Anthony and Edward Barnes 4 each, Brandon Barker and Kyle Spicer 2 each. Barnes was top rebounder with 5 and had 2 blocks. Reuter had 4 rebounds and 3 steals.
