Kimball junior high girls sweep the Bulldogs

The Kimball girls Junior High basketball teams took on the Bridgeport Bulldogs for their second game of the season on Monday, Nov. 14 in Bridgeport. It was a sweeping victory for both the 7 and 8 grade girls.

In 7th grade play, they came out on the floor with good intensity. High scorer for the team was Payton Wise with 8, showing good offensive tenacity according to coach Danielle Reader. Maddie Merryfield followed with four points, and Katie Heeg added three to the Shorthorn board.

“Katie Heeg continues to play a key role in this teams success. Her defense is outstanding,” Reader said. “Maddie Merryfield continues to show a tremendous amount of heart and effort.”

Other seventh-grade scorers were Amy Birkhofer, Emma Mielke and Chantel Malson with two points each.

Reader stated that she saw good things out of all of her players and is looking forward to their continued success. “This group did well for having a weekend off and came out with good intensity.”

“My 8th graders came out pretty flat today and we struggled to get our intensity and game faces on,” coach Michele Daum said.

The team never quit, though and they battled right to the end, according to Daum.

Megan Spicer led the ladies to the board with 12 points to her credit and alongside Sammie Bemis, proved to be tough defensive players on the court, causing the Bulldogs some timely turnovers, Daum said.

Sydney Biesecker put seven on the board, including a game changing trey, followed by Bemis and teammates Jaydin Paxton and Emma Martin with four each.

“It was good to have Sydney Biesecker back as she hit a 3-pointer that tied the game 26-26 and the girls did not look back from this point on,” Daum said. “I was proud of all of my players, but we still have a lot of work to do.”
