Longhorns mark their first win of the season

The Kimball Longhorns (1-6) logged their first victory of the season against the Bayard Tigers (1-6) on Friday, Oct. 7 with a final score of 42-28.

Sophomore Izaac Reuter was able to complete half of his passes against the Tigers, for a total of 55 passing yards and was credited with five carries, totaling 11 yards and one of the five Longhorn touchdowns.

“Izaac had a good game, he completed a very big pass in the third quarter that broke open the game for us,” coach Nick Kuxhausen said. “The offensive line had a really good game and made the job for our backs a lot easier. Both Jaden Withrow and Logan Stahla ran the ball very hard for us as well.”

Withrow ran for a total of 262 yards on 34 carries and made three touchdowns for the Horns while Stahla had 17 carries totaling 61 yards.

Sophomores Jake Jenkins and Colton Mielke scored the remaining two touchdowns and Kyle Spicer gained an additional six yards for the Horns.

“We established some running game and had some success throwing the football,” Kuxhausen said.

Bayard quarterback Mitch McKibbin out-threw the Horns, passing for a total of 74 yards, but the Horns didn’t allow them to gain much ground, giving up just four Tiger touchdowns.

“The defense played a very sound game and contained their passing game. That was the difference in the ball game. The defense did a very good job against Bayard’s passing attack,” Kuxhausen said. “They got a lot of pressure on the QB and our defensive backs did a good job in coverage.”

While everyone on the roster contributed to the defensive game with one or two tackles, Stahla led with nine assists and one solo for a total of 10, followed by Withrow with seven assists and one solo.

Cody Kirby contributed with five assists and two solo tackles for a total of seven while Ryan Soper, Aroon Flores and Kole Bush were each credited with four and Mielke had three.

“We controlled the ball most of the second half, which was the turning point in the game,” Kuxhausen said. “It was a great team effort for our team and we hope to build off of it in the coming weeks.”
