Local scouting organization hosted award ceremony and graduation

One Tuesday, Sept. 13, Cub Scout Troop #31 recognized local scouts, their parents and leaders among other family members and friends, with an awards ceremony and dinner.

The ceremony began with an enthusiastic, energetic skit performed by the scouts. Scouts acted out a camping trip in a forest, with bears and only one tent for protection from the bears. The youngsters performed the skit with the enthusiasm and energy befitting their age, to the delight of leaders, parents and friends.

According to the five-year Cub Master, Josh Gillming, Kimball has one of the oldest Cub/Boy Scout chapters in the State of Nebraska, and will soon be celebrating its 75th year as a functioning organization in Kimball County.

Gillming added that at present time, Kimball only has a Cub Scout membership comprised of boys in grades 1 – 5, as they have had no interest from older boys, but that some currently in the group will soon become of age to be involved in Boy Scouts.

Previously, the local Cubs organization had nine boys as members, according to Gillming, but that number has doubled in the past two weeks.

Though group leaders and volunteers are thrilled about the sudden growth of the organization, and though they wish to grow it even more, Gillming said more community volunteers would be greatly appreciated.

In addition to awards, some troop members graduated to a higher level and received badges for their accomplishments.

According to Randy Gunn, Assistant Master of the Cubs, who has been actively involved with scouting since 1989, Cub Scouts levels begin with Tigers – those boys who are in the first grade.

The next level, for youth in second grade is the Wolves followed by Bears in third grade, and finally, 1st Year Webelos for fourth-graders and 2nd Year Webelos for fifth grade boys.

After graduating from the 2nd Year Webelos a youngster will move on to Boy Scouting.

Those that were awarded during the ceremony include Kip Gillming, Hunter Lonsdale and Joshua Malson, who all graduated from Tiger Scouts to Wolf Scouts.

Patrick Howard graduated from a Bear to a first year Webelo while Joseph Johnson, Aaron Gillming, and Joseph Bremer proudly accepted the bump-up from 1st year Webelo to 2nd year Webelo.

A few of the adult volunteers in the Kimball chapter include Jennifer Gillming (Secretary), Stacy Lonsdale (Treasurer), Joel Linn (Committee Chairperson), Roger Gillming (Chapter Chaplin), Jon Shepard and Stacie Schadegg, who both volunteer to help where they can.
