Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First

Jock Talk

The Western Nebraska golf season is on-going, but even as I say that, some aspects of the season is coming to a close already. The Panhandle Junior Tour concluded this past week with play at Scottsbluff and Gering. We gave you the first day of play last week at Scottsbluff Country Club, and that wound up on Tuesday for those top 8 who made the cut for second day play.

At Scottsbluff, Jordan Greenwood ended up second after leading day one with his 74 and coming back with 80 on day two to shoot 154, two strokes back of Nathan Dvorak of Potter, who plays for Sidney High. Dvorak shot 78-74=152 for the win. Greenwood was the only Kimball golfer to finish in the top three.

At Gering, in the final event of the year for the Panhandle Junior Tour, Dillon Wise ended up second in the older age group shooting 77-71=148, just one stroke back of Dvorak who won with rounds of 74-73=147. Andrew McCloud shot 85 in his first day round but did not make the cut for day two. It was a good day for the Wise family as Payton captured third in the girl’s older age division despite her younger age with solid rounds of 83-87=170.

Next action for at least three of Kimball’s young golfers is the Nebraska Junior Amateur at Omaha on August 1-3. Greenwood, Dillon Wise and Zane Anthony are entered for sure so we will be cheering their efforts.

Jordan Greenwood and family took a trip to Cedar Rapids, Iowa this past week to view Kirkwood College where Jordan has been offered a golf scholarship. Kirkwood is a Division Two Junior College with a very strong golf program. They finished runner-up in this division last year, and are one of the top programs on an annual basis. They have a 15,000 student enrollment, and the Greenwood family was all impressed with the campus and the golf coach.

Jordan has had 32 offers according to his father Kenny but has narrowed it down to a top three. They will look at a school in Texas in about two weeks and then make a decision after that trip. Don’t forget, Kimball High gets this talented young man for one more season before he moves on.

One more reminder about the 25th Annual Kimball Hospital Foundation Golf Classic coming up August 6 at the Four Winds Golf Course. The entry deadline was set for July 22 which of course is past, but you could possibly still call the Pro Shop to see if they could squeeze you in. It is always a great scramble tournament with lots of good food, lots of prizes, and all for a very worthy cause. Proceeds this year will go towards helping to purchase a new bathing spa for patients at Kimball Health Services.
