Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First

Jock Talk

With the exception of some All Star Games, summer camps, and summer league play in various sports, the area High School sport season is over. It ended with the boy’s state golf tournaments and Kimball sent their team to the Class C Tournament held at the Kearney Country Club Course where they finished 6th out of 15 teams and junior Jordan Greenwood wound up 2nd individually out of 89 golfers! Be sure and read the complete story in this issue of the Observer sports.

Mrs. Southard and I were able to get away and make the trip to Kearney and follow the Kimball High golfers. We were blessed with good weather, and it was an enjoyable experience to add to our book of memories.

Congrats to coach Chad Wise and all of his team members for a good showing. This was the third straight trip for Jordan and his third consecutive state medal performance. As a freshman he finished 11th, 9th as a sophomore, and now 2nd! For the other four members of the team, it was their first state appearance but everybody is back next year! Good things ahead for Kimball high boy’s golf.

Coach Wise said “I was proud of our team. We had a good season but, we could have played better. We have a young team, and it was a tough golf course. Very fast greens, tall and tough roughs, and it was a hilly and tough course to walk. None the less, I am already eager for next year”.

Wise went on to say that he expects everybody who was out for golf this year to be back, and the junior golf program will keep most everyone playing through the summer. In fact, some of the team will be in action today (Thursday) at a junior tournament in Gering, including Mr. Greenwood who is taking some of the younger players with him to Gering. On June 8 the Panhandle Junior Golf event will be held at the Kimball Four Winds Course.

As for local golf happenings, the Yellow Ball Fund Raiser Tournament that was scheduled for this past Sunday didn’t happen for lack of entries. The two local Men’s golf leagues will both get going full bore this week and I haven’t heard from the ladies yet but I expect they are ready to get things going as well. Junior golf lessons begin June 10th according to Four Winds Pro Chad Wise and pick up your sign up sheets at the Four Winds Pro Shop.

One of the bigger events of the year at the Four Winds is the upcoming Father’s Day 3-man scramble set for June 18-19. There will be an 11 a.m. shotgun start on Saturday and a 9 a.m. shotgun start on Sunday. Cost is $90 per person which includes an evening meal at the Wind Break Restaurant on Saturday evening. For more information, or to sign up, call or stop by the Pro Shop or call Pat O’Brien at 235-5009.

Another hole-in-one to report that occurred this past Saturday at the Four Winds. Tom O’Brien, playing with his stepson, Cole Henton, aced number three and it was also witnessed by Gene Golding who was on number four tee box. The Hole-in-One story that I promised you readers is still coming, thanks to Greg Robinson who has put together a lot of facts and figures. Maybe next week.

Panhandle Prep All Star Basketball set for this Saturday, June 4, at the WNCC Cougar Palace and Kimball’s Madison Biesecker will be a member of the Girl’s Blue Team being coached by Randy Hurlbut of Gordon-Rushville, and Josh Guerue of Morrill.

Madison is going to be a busy young lady this week as she is also going to play in the Mid Plains All Star Basketball Game being held this Friday, June 3, at the Mid Plains College gymnasium. Game time Friday is 6 p.m. and Saturday is 5:30 p.m. She will have practice in North Platte today (Thursday) but will miss one day of practice for the Saturday game. This isn’t all as she will also play in the West Nebraska All Star Volleyball match on June 11 at Scottsbluff WNCC with a 2 p.m. start time.

The talented young lady just got back from Beatrice with her family as she spent time getting registered to attend Southeast Community College where she was recruited to play volleyball. She already knows her room mates and the whole bit. She reports July 8 to Beatrice for volleyball practice. Exciting times ahead for Madison.
