'On Your Mark, Get Set, Read' Summer reading program begins

Programs for youth, teenagers and adults are offered. More than 45 youngster enjoyed the kick-off with renowned ventriloquist, Meghan Casey

Kimball Public Library's six-week summer reading program got off to a great start.

As of Friday, May 27, 60 youth were registered from Kindergarten through sixth grade, according to director, Jan Sears, with the pre-school session yet to begin and scheduled for Friday, June 3.

While the teen session, Get in the Game, has eight students registered, Sears said there is room for more. Likewise with the adult summer program, though 11 are already signed up.

Award winning ventriloquist, Meghan Casey kick-started the summer program with a show for youngsters in the library's west room, with 45 in attendance and more watching the program, streamed live, in the library main room.

At the tender age of five, Meghan Casey became interested in ventriloquism, due in large part to her father, a ventriloquist who read her stories.

Casey has developed into an award-winning ventriloquist and is now earning enough money with her act to support herself through college.

Casey, a medical student, presents several different programs at libraries and special events. She plans to focus on the health and wellness of children as a doctor and continue using her ventriloquism to entertain and engage.

"Meghan filled the whole hour. The kids were very interested and asked a bunch of questions afterward," Sears said. "A few of them were very curious about how it all worked."

Sears added that the main program, 'On Your Mark, Get Set, Read' will include learning about a variety of things, such as beekeeping, a boot camp, sports heroes, and on June 22 there will be a magician program with Keith West and Miss Kitty at a special time 1:00, instead of 10:15.

"The last program for the summer will be on June 29 at 11 am at the swimming pool," Sears added. "Tiffany Dea will do a little dance fitness on the lawn, then swimming and lunch provided by the library."

The teen program will have sessions on Thursdays from 4 to 5 p.m. with fun presentations, book talks, smart snacking, mind and fitness exercises and more, according to Sears, and will be led by Becky Lowery.

"The ones who complete the simple requirements will be able to attend a Library Lock-in scheduled for July," Sears said.

Adults can read books and enter their names in for drawings, and attend a session on Thursday June 23 from 6 to 7 p.m. Liz Taylor will present KIS(S) - Ways to Simplify Eating Healthy.

The session will conclude with a trip to Sister's Grimm on June 30 for a fun time, Sears added.
