FFA Labor and silent auction planned

Each year Kimball FFA chapter members step up on a platform to earn big money for their local chapter by auctioning their labor.

The Annual Kimball FFA Chapter Labor Auction and Alumni Silent Auction, a tradition in Kimball for decades, will be held this year on Friday, March 11 at the Kimball High School student center.

The FFA student chapter members set up for the event, the chapter's main fundraiser, serve the meal and then will be auctioned off for eight hours of labor during the March evening.

Alumni members are currently making meal plans and gathering silent auction items for the event.

"We have an amazing group of volunteers who help make this auction a success," Wheeler said. "After several conversations with those who came before me – the only answer I have as to when the auction tradition began here in Kimball, is over 50 years ago."

Wheeler added that the funds raised ensure student participation in the local FFA program is independent of financial ability for any student wishing to participate.

"I want to program to be inclusive of all students who are interested and motivated to be an FFA member. The money that is raised by the Kimball FFA at the auction is used to pay for students to attend the trainings, conferences and conventions," she said. "We also buy materials and supplies to support the chapter's program of activities. The chapter tries to cover as much of the costs for students as possible so that money is not a factor in an individual students FFA experience. You may be able to visit with an Alumni members about how they use the money that they raise at the auction. The alumni does some wonderful things for the members."

Wheeler believes that her students receive experiences that they may not be given in other settings. "Often times our local business owners come to support the auction and have members work on their farms, ranches or businesses in many different areas," she added, "This not only gives members opportunities to see the diversity of what is available in our community but it also gives them the opportunity to build relationships with those in the industry."
