Banner County FFA builds on classroom ed

In it's sixth year, the Banner County FFA Chapter includes 16 students with advisor Bill Gifford participating in range judging, land judging, job interview, public speaking, creed speaking, ag demonstrations, welding, livestock management, ag mechanics, vet Science and the Envirothon.

The team qualified for state competition this year in welding, ag mechanics, and vet science, and they will compete in meat judging and agronomy at the district contest in Kimball on March 2.

"The contests build on concepts learned in class, but allows them the opportunity to learn about those areas above and beyond what they learn in class. They spend extra time outside of class and on their own time to continue to build their knowledge base," Gifford said. "The contests provide them situations to apply and expand their knowledge in areas of interest to them and are challenging as they vary so much from year to year. It's not like studying for a typical classroom test, they have to take what they've learned and apply it in a wide variety of situations."

Banner County FFA students are involved in a variety of efforts to promote agriculture, including FFA week activities, according to Gifford.

"FFA week activities help educate, promote agriculture, and encourage new members to join. We plan lessons and activities to share with the elementary classrooms throughout the year to promote agriculture and awareness of FFA, he said. "The FFA organization also provides the Banner County Historical Day meal. Additional activities vary from year to year, depending on community and organization needs."

Building a strong community is among the many benefits of the organization.

"The interaction between the members of our chapter and those of other chapters creates a sense of pride and belonging. Students gain on the spot training in the "soft skills" that are so important to individual success" he said. "Being able to communicate, build relationships, practice work ethic, and demonstrate leadership abilities is the driving force that inspires our young people to educate others about the agricultural industry."
