Kimball hosts speech invitational

Kimball's team did not place at the home event, despite high scores and twelve individual medalists

The Kimball High School Speech team competed on Saturday, Feb. 13 at the high school, along with fourteen other schools. It was Kimball's first invitational.

"Our kids were spectacular with setting up, cleaning up and being excellent hosts," coach Jenn Dillinger said, "I am so thankful for great coach friends who pitched in and for having the most delightfully fun assistant coach ever."

There is a total of 17 students on Dillinger's Kimball speech team; they performed a total of twenty-seven different pieces.

There was a lot of variety as speech consists of nine different events including Oral Interpretation of Drama (OID), duet acting, serious prose, extemporaneous speaking (done without preparation), humorous prose, informative speaking, poetry, persuasive speaking and entertainment.

"There were written events," Dillinger added, "with some of our topics consisting of why we shouldn't fear failure, foot-binding, and the history of the signature."

Kimball students also participated in interpretation events, where the work of other authors were performed. Some were funny, some sad and others were thought-provoking.

Saturday's meet went well, according to Dillinger, and she said that her students performed well. Sidney was the class A/B champions. In C/D, Gordon-Rushville was the champion and Leyton was the runner-up. The Kimball team scored very high, but didn't place but had twelve medalists, including Leisha Casimiro, who was champion in Informative Speaking.

"As for how my students are doing this year," Dillinger said, "I couldn't be more proud. They have won meets, including the WTC championship, and ranked very high in two other meets. Each student is working very hard, and they are improving daily."
