Local teen awarded for heroism

A small group of residents, ambulance crew members and the Kimball City Mayor, joined one grateful Helen Kuhlman to honor 18 year old Garrett Pruett, of Kimball, who some have called a hero.

The group gathered at noon on Thursday, Feb. 4 in the City conference room where Prunty presented Pruett with a certificate from the City and introduced Kuhlman to Pruett, stating, "This is Helen. The lady that you saved."

The mayor, Pruett and Mrs. Kuhlman stood in front of the room. "Garrett, we would like to give you this Certificate of Commendation and want to publicly commend you," purported the Kimball mayor, "for your excellence on Friday, Jan. 22, 2016. Your quick thinking helped pull her to safety. So, on behalf of myself and the Kimball City Council, thank you for your selflessness and for being an example of a good citizen."

The incident that warranted the honor took place on that Friday at the Kwik Stop in Kimball, where Kuhlman had stopped to get gasoline in her '93 Buick LeSabre. Just a few feet short of the gas pumps her car caught fire and she was unable to unlock her vehicle to exit.

Pruett rescued the 92 year old woman by knocking out her passenger side window, unlocking the door, and pulling Kuhlman out of the car.
