Kimball boys fall to Bridgeport

The Kimball High boys fell to a couple of strong opponents during SPVA Conference Tournament play this past week. In first round play they travelled to Bridgeport, the eventual champions, and lost 67-25, and in a first round losers bracket contest on Friday at North Platte the Horns lost to Hershey 68-31.

The first quarter was Kimball’s best quarter at Bridgeport and they still trailed 16-8 to the tall and talented Bulldog team. By half time it was 37-15 and before it was over, the game was being played with a running clock as the margin reached the 40 point separation mark. Bridgeport coach Nick Broz said “This was the best we have p~ed so far this season”.

The Horns simply could not match up on this night as they had 23 turnovers and only 21 rebounds, 6 steals, 7 assists, 1 block, 12 fouls, shot 1/2 at the foul line, 10/47 from the field including 4/19 on 3 point attempts. They were led in scoring by Jordan Greenwood with 11 including 3 treys. Jordan also had 5 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 assist. Tyler Magninie had 5 with 1 trey. Trent Rutledge 4 along with 3 boards, 2 steals, 2 assists and a block. Angel Flores 4, and Creg Barker 1.

Bridgeport had 32 rebounds, were 10/15 at the line, 5/18 on 3 point field goal attempts and 21/39 on 2 pointers. Quentin Baxter, 6’6” senior, had 21 points with 4 treys. Andrew Nelson, 6’6” senior, had 18, Wyatt Pankowski, 6’3” senior, had 15 giving the winners three players in double figures. The Bulldogs would go on to defeat Perkins County 48-42 in the title game after winning over North Platte St Pats 45-35 in semi final play.

The Horns travelled to North Platte on Friday evening to play Hershey and couldn’t keep pace with the Panthers. A good night for Jaden Withrow who scored over half of Kimball’s points with his team high 16. He was 6/12 from the field and 2/5 on 3 pointers along with 2/2 at the foul line. Tyler Magninie had 6 points, Angel Flores 5 with a trey, Jordan Greenwood 2 and Creg Barker 2.

As a team, Kimball was 13/44 from the field for 30%, 3/19 on 3 point attempts for 16%, 2/9 at the line for 22%. They had 20 turnovers, 2 blocked shots, 11 steals,S assists, and 13 rebounds.

The Horns are back in action this weekend hosting Sutherland on Friday night with JV game time at 3:30, and will travel to North Platte Saturday to face the St Pats Irish with JV game time set for a 1 p.m. start time with the boy’s varsity to tip off around 5:30 p.m. Mountain time. The Horns are now 5-9 on the season.
