Freshman Kate Reader gets big on defense in a game against Perkins County earlier this season. Reader has been a formidable opponent and reliable teammate in her first season for the Lady Longhorns.
Coach Chauncey Pedersen saw one of his Christmas wishes come true as his Kimball High girls are 6-0 at the Holiday Break! Now,after an extended break, the Lady Horns returned to practice this week getting ready for a tough return with three games in a row beginning January 7-8-9. The January 7 game is at Sidney against a strong Class B school, then a road trip to face a very good Mitchell team the next night and finally a home game on January 9 with Chase County coming to town. A couple of days rest and then Kimball is off to Potter Dix to face a very good Class D club. The work has just begun!
At the break the Lady Horns have won 3 games at home, 3 on the road, and are 2-0 in conference play Kimball has scored 371 points averaging 61.8 per game and have allowed the opponents 205 points or 34.1 points per game. As a team Kimball is shooting 33% from the field including 39% on 2 point field goal attempts and 17% on 3 point attempts. At the foul line the team is shooting a good 64% converting 92 of 144 attempts. Other team stats show the Horns getting the job done on the boards with 39.2 rebounds per game. They have 17 blocks, 96 steals for 16 per game, 71 assists and 11.8 per game, and 92 turnovers for 15.3 per game.
Looking now at individual stats, senior Danika Daum is off to a great start averaging 24.5 points with 147 points scored so far. She has proven to be most potent at the foul line making 42/59 free throws for 71%. The six foot senior is also averaging double figures in rebounding with 11.8, has 8 blocks, 18 steals, and 8 assists. Her scoring ranks high in state figures.
Kate Reader, a freshman, has scored 76 points averaging 12.7 per game while shooting 46% from the field and 64% at the foul line. She is also second in rebounding at 7.8 per game, has 6 blocks, and 14 steals.
Sophomore Alex Reader has scored 42 points averaging 7 points a game, averages 4.2 rebounds, shoots 65% at the line, has hit 5 treys, has 15 steals, and a team high 25 assists.
Madison Biesecker has scored 40 points averaging 6.7, has 27 rebounds, 19 steals, and 21 assists and has done a solid job at the point guard position and bringing the ball down court.
Arica McCloud has 38 points and averages 6.3, leads the team in treys with 6, is 4/4 at the foul line, has 25 rebounds, 16 steals and 9 assists. Myriah Tyan, who suffered a knee injury in the second game of the season and lost some playing time, has 16 points and a 4 point average in her four games, has 28 rebounds.
These are the leaders in most categories at this time but coach Pedersen is getting some good play from others including senior Kailey Dickerson, a senior with starting experience. He is trying to develop more depth to spell the talent that has carried the club so far. As good as it has been, the Kimball ladies have a tough road ahead. Good luck in the New Year!
