Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First

Jock Talk

Good bye 2015 and Hello 2016. You sports fans have had a short break, along with all of our area high school coaches and athletes, but now it is time to usher in the new year and get back to work.

All Nebraska high school athletes were to have an NSAA Moratorium where they would not practice for five days from December 23 to December 28. This means that our local programs got back to practicing this past Monday and they will return to action January 7.

The Kimball High wrestlers will be on the home mats hosting the Western Trails Conference Tournament and this gives our home town fans a chance to see some of the state’s top wrestlers in action without even leaving town! Mat time is 9 a.m. The Kimball wrestlers go to the Garden County Tournament on January 9.

The Kimball High basketball teams open with a flourish also beginning January 7 at Sidney, January 8 at Mitchell, and January 9 at home with Chase County.

Latest report on Kimball’s Mike Daum is he helped his South Dakota State men’s basketball team to a 65-61 win over Middle Tennessee State by scoring 10 points and pulling 3 rebounds in 15 minutes of court time.

Congrats going out to Kimball High junior Brandon Barker for being named to the Star Herald All Region Third Team for the 2015 Cross Country season.

Congrats to Kimball High’s Danika Daum for her honorable mention by the Omaha World Herald on their Class C-l State Volleyball team, and to Potter Dix’s Alexus Rozelle, Dawson Sharmon, and Regyn Hicks for the same honors in Class D-2.

The NSAA has released the 2016-17 football District assignments with Kimball listed in Class C-2. The C2-8 district will consist of Bayard, Bridgeport, Hershey, Kimball, North Platte St Pats, and Valentine.

I hope all you readers enjoyed the National Championship the University of Nebraska Women’s Volleyball Team gave us. What a great program coach John Cook runs.

Also, a big win by the Huskers over UCLA in their Bowl game. Wasn’t it fun to see the Big Red running the football again? Wasn’t it fun to see freshman running back Ozigbo in action? Makes me wonder why it took an entire season for the coaches to realize what a talent he is. Hope to see lots more of him the next three years. GO BIG RED!
