Alvina "Dorothy" E. Brown

Dorothy E. Brown, age 94, passed away at Mitchell Care Center in Mitchell, Nebraska on December 16, 2015. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 30th, at the Gering First United Methodist Church, 900 O Street, Gering, Nebraska 69341, burial to follow at West Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 29th, at the Gering Memorial Chapel, in Gering. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions are preferred and welcome at the Gering First United Methodist Church. Please contact the church with any question at 308.436.2320. Dorothy was born Alvina E. Brown on January 15, 1921 to Melvin L. and Ethel M. (Pester) Brown in North Platte. Dorothy graduated from Gering High School with the class of 1938. In 1939 she became reacquainted with Melvin Brown of Kimball, whom she had known all her life. Melvin and Dorothy were married July 13, 1941.

Dorothy and Melvin have been active in the Gering First United Methodist Church, serving on many church committees. Dorothy was a member of the Katahdin Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution where she remained an active member at the state and local levels for many years. In addition to D.A.R., she was the Honorary Vice President of the Old Settlers for the 79th Oregon Trail Days in July 2000 and received her commission as an Admiral in the Nebraska Navy. Dorothy was an avid bridge player, accomplished painter and phenomenal baker and cook, who loved to entertain.

Dorothy is survived by her grandchildren, Michael Olson-Jones and wife Lydia of Gering, Nebraska, and Jennifer Jorgensen and husband James of Las Vegas, Nevada, as well as, many other relatives and close friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Melvin, daughter Cheryl Ann Booth, son Randy Brown, brother and sister-in-law Edward “Bud” and Jane Raymond Brown, sisters and brothers-in-law Gwen and Charles Beard, and Jack and Phyllis Brown.
