Remember that for which we are thankful

What is it that comes to mind first when you are asked, “What are you thankful for?”

The health, happiness and safety of my loved ones – these are the first three thoughts that come to mind when I express gratitude. I too can echo the expressions of thanks for home, warmth and food.

I am truly grateful for the gift of freedom provided by those men and women who are ready and willing to fight for it.

Recently I read a friend’s tribute to the people of Kimball. She thanked each person she mentioned for their “gift,” whether that be laughter, generosity, friendship or love of our community. These gifts may be taken for granted or occasionally overlooked, but each one of us has a gift to present our family, friends and our community.

I am grateful for the people with whom I surround myself. My family is the very best, my friends too, and I couldn’t dream of a better team at work. But there are a few things for which I am thankful, that may come as a surprise.

I feel blessed to have been dealt the illnesses from which my children suffer. I far prefer having the trials of sickness above the loss of not having kids.

I am thankful for the hardships we faced growing up. I know now that happiness does not come from the most in demand Christmas gift, the most recent fashions or a great car.

I am grateful that my children’s father has found happiness. That happiness shines through in his interactions with others, most specifically our children.

I am thankful for difficulties I have faced in the past. Without them I may not be fully able to appreciate the blessings I have now.

Most of all, I am grateful for the gift of Jesus, available for us all and I am further thankful for the right for each of us to believe as we do and express that openly.
